Opened on May 4, 2011. I have previously had the barrel-aged version, which was really nice, so I was looking forward to this. Thanks to RSchaeffer for the extra!
Pours black with two full fingers of thick tan head. Shaun knows his aesthetics. Ridiculous lacing. The only complaint is that the second pour yields almost too much head (four full fingers).
Smoky roast coffee, tons of milk chocolate, dark fruit and a nice milky creaminess. Toffee sweetness alongside a really pleasant spiciness. The sweeter and milky parts remind me of Velvet Merkin, but this features much more spicy balancing complexity and "robust," smoky elements.
Both milk and [xx%] cocoa dark chocolate, espresso roast coffee beans, peppercorn, and an ashy smokiness. The spicy oak found in the -bal version is here too. How? - I have no idea. More or less maps onto the nose.
At first, this has too much carbonation - medium-bodied, with full, expanding-in-the-mouth carbonation. Thirty minutes later, the creaminess characteristic of HFS comes through, and the body feels appropriately fuller.
Different, but pleasantly so. It’s almost exactly what I expected - spicy, somewhat smoky, rich, quietly oaky, with coffee and chocolate. A winner.

A~ black! with hardly any head.
S~ sooo much roasty coffee! a little sweetness, kind of like a milk stout followed by dark chocolate and some figs.
T~ Cocoa, roasty malts, and dark figs up front. followed by a crazy sweetness on the finish with a dark coffee aftertaste. wow! way more coffee on the nose though.
M~ oh so smooth! slightly carbonated, has more of a stout feel then a porter.

Perfect black pour w/ a retaining mocha head & excellent lacing. Aroma is exquisite but not really detectable & rather unusual. Taste is chocolate candy like with a coffee bitterness in the finish. Draught @ Cooper’s Craft & Kitchen - Chelsea. Opaque dark brown with foamy beige head, coffee beans aroma, medium carbonation, slightly sweet mocha-roasted malt taste with alcohol undertones, smooth and thickish body, long bitter mocha finish. Draft at Armsby Abbey. Pours black with an inch of khaki foam. Leaves a shitload of lacing in the glass. Massive roasted chocolate malt notes on the nose. Lots of chocolate on the tongue. Very thick and luxiourius with a bit of hoppiness on the finish. Just a gorgeous gorgeous beer.

Pours a dark black color with a nice mocha head. Nose of vanilla, chocolate malts, roasted coffee, woodyness, dark fruits, caramel malts. Taste is incredibly smooth, so creamy and thick. Shared at gregwilsonstl house. It poured a black color with a dark brown head. The aroma was of dark roast, bitter chocolate, caramel, malts, light smokiness and dark fruits. The taste was similar to the aroma with more dark chocolate, roast, caramel, tobacco, licorice, light smokiness, wood and dark sweet fruits. Tasty.
