Look; black beer, beige vanished top.
Aroma; ice coffee, caramel, zebra candies, grassy hops.
Taste; ice coffee black sort of, caramel, dark prune peels fermented through something -
and finishes very well liquorice-pruned.
Palate; good body, soft, good.
Overall; tasty stuff. Alive again on the market?
A couple of samples at Extreme Beer Fest 2011.
Pours a opaque, dark chocolate brown with a thin, wispy mocha head. Aggressive nose of roast coffee, cream, dark chocolate, light vanilla. Surprisingly little booze or burnt notes, smells like Earl on steroids. Dark and roasty flavor, obviously dominated by roasted coffee and dark malts and nice transition from sweet to bitter throughout into the finish. stopped in winter 10 and was lucky to sample this beast. pours a pitch black color with a viscous swirl to it. not much head on this one. smell is intense rich roasty carmel malt with a coffee kick. taste is a blast of dark chocolatey slightly roasty malts and a rich coffee presesnce. slight sweetness, a bit of a coffee bitterness and a hoppy bitterness. the mouthfeel is quite viscous but not overly heavy. an intense flavor experience i would like to revisit. blklab2007 (2120) - Connecticut, USA - JUL 17, 2011

Very dark rich pour at EBF. Pretty thick, no head. Aroma is very strong, lots of coffee and espresso, roasted malts and alcohol. Flavor is pretty hot, lots of alcohol, lots of coffee. Just a touch went a long way. Interesting effort.

Pour yields a fairly dark brown bodied brew with a very thin tan head that falls into a few spots. The nose is quite pungent, though none of that comes from booze, as you may expect from a 15% beer. There are really strong coffee notes plus a good amount of cream and light roast. Mild chocolate there as well. The taste is a beautiful espresso plus some whipped cream and moderate roast. Smooth chocolate in the background and only the faintest hint of alcohol. Really delicious. Body is medium to full with slight alcohol and a coffee bitterness. Really solid; one of the better coffee beers I’ve had and one of the best iced beers I’ve come across.

The look: Near black body topped by a persistent small tan head
In long: The surprisingly not-so-intense nose (it is a 15% after all) has black coffee (d’uh!) and burnt malts. Body is full and carbonation is relatively smooth. Taste of black coffee, burnt brownies, burnt chocolate cake, cacao powder, some milk chocolate. I wouldn’t say there was absolutely no alcohol presence at all, but it sure didn’t feel like a 15% brew. This is a 15% that I could drink a full bomber of without getting sick of it. I had my doubt when I heard of a brewery opening in the middle of farmer fields of the deserted northern Vermont. I never thought this could be a viable project for a brewery making beers that push the envelop. But almost one year later it is clear that Hill Farmstead defeated the odds. So if you’re looking for the odds they’re training at the gym right now.
Sampled from the tap at EBF. Poured an extremely cloudy/murky coffee brown with a brown head that dissipated quickly to the edges. Aroma was full of strong coffee/espresso with a slight roasted malt. Flavor started with espresso the mellowed slightly to allow a bit of roasted malt and a bit of alcohol to come out. Nice on the tongue.
