500ml bottle, big thanks to phaleslu for sharing! Dark brown color. Thin khaki brown head. Good, thicker lace. Nice roasty nose. Good smoke, kind of savory. Actually, much smokier and peatier than expected. So over-smoked. What? Medium to bigger body. Smooth, crisp lighter carbonation. More dry finish. Moderate to bigger bitter taste. Minimal sweet. 500 ml bottle via BA trade. Pours a deep coffee brown with a big tan head that fizzes up and then down quickly before leaving a lasting cap atop the beer. Aroma of dark chocolate, orange peel, smoked and roasted malts, brown sugar, coffee, pine, charred wood, and a faint vinous note. The flavor is a bit more vinous than the nose and not as smoky and roasty. Light-medium bodied, with low carbonation. Smooth and balanced, with a nose that really does the trick. 4/07/2011: Hill Farmstead Jim Black India Pale Ale... Aroma: Lots of sugary, juicy citrus; hints of roasted malts in the backgroud. Appearance: Near black color with a frothy beige crown. Flavor: Caramel sweetness; grassy citrus (GRAPEFRUIT) bitterness; hints of darker roasted malts; hops witha bit of the roasty malts in the background. Palate: Medium body; calm and smooth. Overall: This is a really nice Black IPA; good representation of the style.

500mL bottle. Poured deep brown with a very nice, dense beige head. The aroma picked up toasted black and cocoa malts with fairly fresh oak and peppery accents around.. quite a bit of juniper as it warmed up.. solid stuff. The flavor found black and nutty malts at the core with pine, juniper, and peppery bitterness around.. more bitter toward the finish, with alright balance. Thanks jason for sharing. The beer pours to a black body with a tall creamy dense tan head. The aroma is deep black malt and simcoe hops with subtle oak. The flavor is oaky black malt with some delicious citrus hops. Easy drinking medium body.

On tap at the Harvest Festival. Waited until opening a bottle from this release before writing up both.
Dark, near black with a creamy tan head. Nice retention and a large amount of sticky lacing. Extremely hoppy aroma, pine and wood, with light roast that easily overwhelmed. Flavor is similar, a robust, creamy body with light roast and chocolate malt but the pine hops dominate every aspect of the flavor. Very little oak or wine present in this version. Bottle... Poured near black with a thin, light tan head. Nose had roast with citrus and pine-like hops. Quite balanced. Loads of roasted malts but didn’t seem too sweet. A: This black IPA appears well...dark brown. The beige head is about an inch thick and leaves plenty of lacing on the glass.
S: I can tell that this is going to be a good beer. The aroma is a delicate balance of pine, hops, and roasted malt. Very enticing!
T: This beer is excellent. Roasted malt, meet piny hop resin. Absolutely delicious. Hill Farmstead nailed this one!
M: Medium bodied with a present hop bitterness and somewhat of a dry finish.
D: A great example of the style. I would be excited to have this again.
