*10/29/2013 750ml growler poured into a Hill Farmstead oversized wine glass. A~ very dark for a brown ale. you can definitely see the color in the light though. nice bubbly head and a little bit of lacing. S~ not too much going on here. a little smoke, oaky wood and caramel. T~ opens up a bit here. smoke up front, sweet roasted malts and caramel mid palette. with a smooth molasses finish. all followed by a smokey brown sugar after taste that lingers. M~ kind of thick, definitely a molasses/caramel feel here which plays nicely with the overall flavor. nice carbonation and surprisingly smooth despite the thickness. O~ very nice smoked ale, not overly smokey with an amazing balance. i was under the presumption that this was George based and i can totally see that now. the smoke just seems to take away the hop presence that George does so well but its all good! the balance is what really shines here!

Originally reviewed 10/25/2013. 750 mL bottle poured into a snifter. Deep brown. Small khaki head. Gone quickly. Transparent. Smells woody and smokey. Malty, but I can’t smell any real sugary components. Taste is more malty. Less intense on the smoke. Very woody. Deep caramel malt, but again no sweetness. Smoke gets stronger throughout. A little chocolate in the back. Ashyand woody finish. Medium body. Medium carbonation. Very strong and bitter finish. This is intense. Much more caramel as it warms, but still strong verging on rough.

Draft. Dark pour with tan head. Smoked and light oak, mild roasted tones. Smoked malt, some light roasted tones and cocoa tones. Very nice smoked, not overpowering.

Tap at Cigar City Brewpub. Pours a clear deep brown. Thick beige foam. Lacing of God. Nose is fresh and herbal, dense German black forest, fresh pine. Low to no smoke. Taste is cocoa bitter, slightly earthy, soft earth, some toffee, sharp dusty mouthfeel. Dry, earthy, very herbal. Smoke restrained.

On tap at Blackback Pub: Pours dark brown with a thin beige head. Roasted malt arome with a bit pf peat, and a lot of smoke. Flavor is smokey but not as strong as I expected with the aroma, earthy, and nutty. The smoke isn’t overwhelming but this seems really thin with something with the HF name on it. This is a good beer, but my least favorite HF I’ve ever had. Still pretty good, though.

Draft at Blackback Pub, Waterbury. Blackish brown pour. Earthy peat, roasted maltiness, touch of nuttiness. Smokey peat notes add a nice dimension. Nice smoked

Dark brown, off-white head. Nose is light smoke, toffee, a touch of smoked meats. Taste is lightly smoked meats, caramel, toffee, light smokiness in the finish. Nice mouthfeel for a brown ale.

Fut @ Blackback Pub. Brune opaque. Nez de grain rôti, fumée et pointe de sucre. Bouche crémeuse de chocolat au lait et de grains rôtis; la fumée est subtile mais présente et le tout est superbement intégré.

Verres au Blackback Pub et à la brasserie. Arômes de fumée (charcuterie, bois, cuir) et de malts toastés. Robe brune et trouble, légère dentelle, effervescence souple et texture veloutée remarquable. En bouche, la fumée est moins imposante qu’au nez et se montre en équilibre avec des malts toastés rappelant les noix. La texture en bouche est vraiment d’une souplesse remarquable. Le bière se termine sur une finale assez sucrée, mais elle demeure très facile à boire et l’alcool est absolument invisible. Une très belle création.
