Sample at Daily Growler. The beer is a hazy dark amber/copper color with a medium off-white head that recedes steadily to an outer ring. Stringy lacing on the glass. Aroma of roasted malt, bourbon and caramel. Full-bodied with flavors of caramel malt, oaky bourbon and fruit. The finish is oaky with a caramel and bourbon aftertaste. Pretty good overall. crossovert (12934) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - MAR 15, 2011
UPDATED: AUG 17, 2014 Was a bit thin, i got the last few ounces before the barrel kicked. It is big and bourbony with a surprising bitterness. Edit: Had it on draft at the source. It is exaclty what I stated above but this version was a bit less boozy and more hop forward. It is also extremely dark for an ipa. deyholla (11605) - Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA - JUL 14, 2012
On tap at Owen & Engine. Pours a clear amber with a light brown head that dissipates to the edges and laces slightly. Aroma has a note of grapefruit and pine with a decent amount of vanilla and sweet grain. Flavor has some oaky vanilla up front with a good amount of grapefruit coming out. shrubber85 (11408) - Greenville, Indiana, USA - JUL 11, 2015
Bottle. Earthy sour milk caramel malt and grapefruit peel aroma. Cloudy brown with moderate head. Very sweet brown sugar malt and moderately strong pine/grapefruit peel flavor. Not particularly pleasant. BVery (10510) - Plymouth, Minnesota, USA - AUG 31, 2014
Bottle. Rich copper pour with a foamy white head. Rich caramel malt, grapefruit, and pine aroma. Some soft wood and bourbon. Bold rich flavor.

Draft at Dutch’s. Pours a deep reddish amber copper color with a small beige head. The aroma and flavor have caramel, bourbon, vanilla, oxidized hops, wood, dark fruits, this is much more like a barley wine after 20 months in a barrel, but tasty. Some earthy bitterness to the finish. This is better than most of their other beers I’ve had. DrSilverworm (9671) - Cincinnati, Ohio, USA - MAY 30, 2014
On tap at Dutch’s. Mostly clear dark red color, kind of brown from a distance. Thin khaki head. Leaves a few dots of lace. Bigger body. Lighter, reasonably smooth, kind of crisp carbonation. Lightly drying finish. Good bigger toasty malt, some dark fruit, oak, vanilla, light spiciness. Bigger earthy hop aroma, with a satisfying moderate to bigger bitterness. Lighter sweet taste. Satisfying level of alcohol warmth. A pretty well-rounded, satisfyingly malty and complex barrel aged DIPA. Better than expected! One of the better barrel-aged DIPAs I’ve had, probably. The barrel aromas here work much better than in more pale examples. bytemesis (8411) - Sunnyvale, California, USA - JUL 21, 2014
Tap. Pours hazy red amber, medium creamy beige head, nice lacing. Aroma is rich bourbon, vanilla, toffee. Flavor follows, full sweet, light bitter, rich, bourbon, oak, vanilla, dark sugars. Full body, creamy, lingering bitterness. Nice, but this is a barley wine... PorterPounder (7970) - Tallahassee, Florida, USA - AUG 20, 2014
Tallahassee, Fl. - New Leaf Market - 12 oz bottle. Pours a dark copper with a slight off-white head. Aroma has some overdone too-much crystal malt home brew funkiness, a touch of house brand bourbon. Flavor is overly sweet for a Double IPA - some maple syrup sweetness, some bourbon notes, some brown sugar, just a touch of citrus bitter. More like a barleywine in my humble opinion. Definitely save for the winter. Ughsmash (7508) - Pewaukee, Wisconsin, USA - DEC 27, 2007
On tap at Hinterland – Milwaukee. Poured a brilliant garnety-red with a light ring and a swirly beige head. The aroma picked up sweet, lovely bourbon and vanilla-accented caramel and grapefruit sweetness.. remarkably soft and calculating, with the barrel seamlessly-integrated with the nice underlying beer. The flavor found sweet, strong (but not oppressive) bourbon sugars, drawn caramel, and grapefruit at the base with vanilla-accented grapefruit bitterness on the edges.. tangy bourbon sugars and some orange zest emerge for the finish.. tasty! Medium-bodied with low carbonation.. a bit of a grainy oak theme.. nicely toasted. Good stuff!
