Bottle, a month before expiry. Pours a very dark mahogany amber, finger of full beige foam. Nicely aroma of caramel, plenty of hops, pine, citrus. Nicer flavour, very balanced between malts that give off caramel and some dark fruit, cherry and plum, and the hops. Nicely carbonated up front before quite a creamy back half and solid pine and citrus bitterness lingering. I tend to underestimate the Hitachino core range but they never disappoint.

Bottle from Oddbins Rosemount. Looks like Cola swirling with sediment and a thick caramel foam head. Nose of treacle toffees, Cola and bittersweet hops. Caramel malts with a light sparkling palate. Reminiscent of British export ale with a lighter, refreshing palate. Nice stuff.

UPDATED: AUG 3, 2016 The Nest Beer Amber Ale has a strong smell of liquorice and is a deep red/brown in colour with a small head. Medium carbonation. Malty soy sauce and caramel rounded off with bitter hops. Slight coffee finish. Very palatable but not the best example of an amber ale. Japanese beer with Belgian character. Bottle was slightly out of date- still good regardless but may have affected the judgement.

Bottle. Clear amber colour with almost no head. Aroma is mostly of caramel, sweet, malty, candi, some dried fruits, raisins. Taste is quite hoppy and caramel. Way too bitter for me. Bitter aftertaste.

33cl bb04/2016, konichidiosynkrasie for the excellent extrae. - Luminous auburn pour, luxurious polished furniture. Suave honeyed Maris Otter, tea-dunked madeleine. More black tealeaf bitterness in taste, getting more resinous plus sweet like candied orange pith. Love the cushioned sweet malt profile here against the UK style hop aromatics, with an almost, yes, umami savouriness coming in. Assertive lingering bitterness rounding off this intensely enjoyable Nippon-ESB with an austere bite.
