Dark beer existed in Bavaria long before light beer. This was the first type of beer to be brewed at Hofbräuhaus when it was founded. Today, when beer-lovers all over the world talk about dark beer, they usually mean a Munich style beer. Today, Hofbräu Dunkel - the archetypal Bavarian beer - is still as popular as ever. With its alcoholic content of around 5.5% volume and its spicy taste, it’s a refreshing beer that suits all kinds of occasion. A beer in the traditional Munich style!

Draft at Maple Tree Inn. Pours a deep brown with a nice and creamy head. Nose is a touch toasty with a distinct melanoidin component and some light sweetness. On taste, seems a bit caramelly and sweeter than expected, but is round and full. Mediumed bodied and a decent clean finish. Solid beer, this one.

Bottle. Pours a dark caramel with off-white foam. Smells crisp and hoppy like a pilsner. Tastes initially crisp and slightly hoppy but mellows out into a lightly roasty/caramely sweet flavor.

pours clear redish brown with a thin white head and some lacing. the first wave of aroma was rather skunky and a very lagerish aroma of sour pale malt persists. taste is better with some dark malt coming through but the body is thin and there’s little yeast flavor. the hops are apparent after a moment. finishes light but mildly warming. I’ll attribute the bad aroma to the green bottle it comes in but other than that, this is a generally unremarkable beer.

50 cl bottle from a supermarket in Barcelona. It pours a hazy deep brown liquid with some amber tones, with a high white and consistent head, lasting somehow throughout the beer, but leaving no lacing. The aroma is very complex: wheaty, with orange, as well as malty, with roasted malts giving caramel, reisin and a little licorice hints. It tastes malty, with a very refreshing wheaty touch, kind of sweet and acidic. It is very similar to the nose, but with an annoying watery touch. In the mouth it feels smooth, watery, softly carbonated, ending a little dry and with a low bitterness. There’s a grassy hops aftertaste, also. Decent presentation (bottle and crown cap) that makes it clear it is a dunkel. Easy-drinking beer; nice.

Best session beer of all time. IT is darker in color, but light in flavor, with just enough sweetness. The ultimate beer to session on a hot summer day.

Aroma is roasty malty and sweet. Appearance is dark brown with hint of red, crystal clear and small light tan head. Taste is dark malt forward, not quite roasty, but dark malts. Bread crust, toffee, mineral-y, tobacco. Hops bitterness present but balanced just right with malt. Palate is crisp and smooth. Overall a very nice Dunkel. Right on to style. Nothing fancy, just a quality dark lager. I could drink these all day.

A very standard, basic dunkel, but does everything very well, not too sweet, not too strong, not too over the top but balanced and smooth.

Tap at Hofbrauhaus Las Vegas. Pours a uniformly dark brown appearance with a fairly big tan head. Some nuttiness in the nose but mostly just a dark brown lager aroma. Flavor isn’t too exciting with a sweet brown lager flavor with a bit of nuttiness. Sweet malty finish.

Green 12 oz. bottle poured to my SA Lager glass, with a clear, mahogany hue, abundant and creamy, off white foam to the head, and curtainy ribbons of lacing. The aroma was light toast and cookie notes, some sweet caramel, a hint of cocoa, but a light metallic hint toward the back. The flavor added smooth malt, good carbonation, and complimentary, but moderate hop bitterness. A decent, representative Dunkel, except for the flawed aroma.
