Dark beer existed in Bavaria long before light beer. This was the first type of beer to be brewed at Hofbräuhaus when it was founded. Today, when beer-lovers all over the world talk about dark beer, they usually mean a Munich style beer. Today, Hofbräu Dunkel - the archetypal Bavarian beer - is still as popular as ever. With its alcoholic content of around 5.5% volume and its spicy taste, it’s a refreshing beer that suits all kinds of occasion. A beer in the traditional Munich style!

Test vom 2.6.2006, Gebinde: Glasflasche Noten: 8,10,8,8,13,8 - 8,55

.5 liter draft @ Der Schwarze Kölner in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. Served in a HB glass mug, this dunkel is pretty solid. Despite its strong malty flavor, there’s a spicy tinge as well as a noticeable bite from the hops. Only downfall is the molasses like residual effect after drinking.

Deep, dark brown colour with a thick off-white head that has an almost brown colour & the retention/lacing is nice. Roasted malts, some mild caramel and chocolate & also a burnt toast smell somewhere in the middle with a nutty finish. Roasted malts upfront with the taste, along with some hints of both caramel & nuts. The taste is slightly watery but not incredibly so, there is also some earthy hops in there & a mild bitter finish. It’s smooth although slightly watery but has good texture and carbonation though with a slightly dry finish. A pretty average dunkel here and certainly not the best out there. A little too watery and lacked somewhat in taste although it was by no means a bad beer. *** 1001 Best Beers to Try: ***

The head dissipates quickly. Malty with a hint of fruit in the finish. Palate is thinnish but a good beer.

The only Dunkel that appears on the top 50 available on hand, I grabbed it for the style tick. It smelled pretty darn skunky despite being pretty fresh. I will give it some room on aroma because there was a slight hint of dark roasted malt lurking underneath the surface. Thankfully the taste was much better, despite being skunky on the front it tasted actually rather robustly chocolate-like on the finish. Comparable, in my opinion, to the SA Chocolate Bock at its best. This hardly makes it a good beer, but I imagine a fresh and unskunked sample might actually taste quite good.

Hat at the world famous Hofbrauhaus in Munich. Pours pretty brown and tastes wheaty, malty, some caramel and oranges. don’t let its dark color fool you its light and easy drinking brew. quite a few of these along with the traditional were consumed in this extremely fun locale.

Bottle in Berlin. Dark, cereals, some caramel, decent balance. Fine with food, but no need to go out of your way for this.

Best dark lager I’ve ever tasted after U Fleku. Drank a Mass at Hofbraeuhaus in Munich. It was unforgettable. This seems to be one of those beers that you have to drink at the source. It really loses a lot of character in transportation, and the ones I’ve had in America just didnt taste like they did at the source. Its much fresher and has a much more refined and delicate character in Munich.
