Dark beer existed in Bavaria long before light beer. This was the first type of beer to be brewed at Hofbräuhaus when it was founded. Today, when beer-lovers all over the world talk about dark beer, they usually mean a Munich style beer. Today, Hofbräu Dunkel - the archetypal Bavarian beer - is still as popular as ever. With its alcoholic content of around 5.5% volume and its spicy taste, it’s a refreshing beer that suits all kinds of occasion. A beer in the traditional Munich style!

LCBO shelf filler. Malty, with a touch of an edge. So-so drinkability. Medium brown colour. OK.

Spicy earthy nose with bakers chocolate and roast malt. Pours a dark chestnut and holds a thick white creamy head. Full creamy body. Dark malts meld seemlessly with muted coppery hops to deliver a very clean and flavorful lager. Certainly a benchmark for the dunkel style. These are dangerously drinkable.

Fad i Hofbräuhaus i München. Farven er mørk brun med en brunlig skumkrone, Aromaen er sødlig malt, pinjekerner og karamel, medens smagen domineres af karamel og humle.

DATE TASTED: December 5, 2015 ... GLASSWARE: Celebrator doppelbock pokal... OCCASION: easing out of the annual Sheridans’ Christmas party... APPEARANCE: cola black body; off-white, fizzy half-finger head that settles to a reasonable ring; lacing is sweeping in arches... AROMA: sweet hints of chocolate and peat; slight roasted elements; hops are light and floral... PALATE: medium-bodied, smooth and mellow in its intensity; a late weight holds the throat; otherwise, oily and dry...TASTE: the taste profile is agreeable in its mellowness, with the sweet malts pleasing in its chocolate and candied sugars--as such, the balance in hops keeps the experience from being one-sided, and the light, aromatic hops welcome the next sip... OVERALL: a sessionable accompaniment to an evening, as either a nightcap or a main course...smooth enough to swig, but just flavorful enough to slow it all down...

50cl bottle at the Screening Room, Singapore on 23-Nov-2015. Pours a redfish amber colour with a tan coloured head. Medium body and carbonation. Aroma of sweet malt, pine and caramel. Great flavour profile - caramel and hops prominently. Some vanilla. Lots of similarities to an amber ale.

Bottled, 500ml at The University Club, Oxford. Dark brown with cream head. Sweet malts to the fore, there is a caramelised character, sweet toffee notes and then a herby background. There is a late vanilla note. Pretty good.

Smells Malty Pours a dark caramel colour. Good amount of head that disappears quickly. Taste is a darker and sweeter version of the Munchner beer. Wish it wasn’t so sweet. Great carbonation. Little aftertaste. Overall I was very happy in my purchase. I still prefer the "light" version. MB The Beer Bearon

A very pleasant, smooth dark lager! Subtle notes of chocolate, fig, caramel, and even some coffee. Noticeable but subdue hops. This is definitely an Octoberfest staple for those liking dark seasonal beers. For those that hardly drink a darker beer or not sure if they will like one this one is a great starting point! Recommended!
