COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Dark beer existed in Bavaria long before light beer. This was the first type of beer to be brewed at Hofbräuhaus when it was founded. Today, when beer-lovers all over the world talk about dark beer, they usually mean a Munich style beer. Today, Hofbräu Dunkel - the archetypal Bavarian beer - is still as popular as ever. With its alcoholic content of around 5.5% volume and its spicy taste, it’s a refreshing beer that suits all kinds of occasion. A beer in the traditional Munich style!

A great beer, I must say; I found it to be immediately enjoyable and noted that I would certainly drink it again.
It pours an appealing dark colour with a decent frothy head which, unfortunately, recedes a bit too quickly. It has an enduring and pleasing flavour; with a distinct hint of caramel. It goes down very well. Well worth buying!

Reddish/Amber in color. Clear. Very, very nice thick, creamy off white head. Really hanging around also. Leaving some nice lacing behind as I sip. Fresh smelling hops. A bit of the ’grassiness" that accompanies most German beers. Some toastiness. Maybe some faint roasted coffee. Very well balanced. Not overdone with the "grassineess". Again getting the roasted or toasted coffee in the taste. Coffee flavor is mild, not like a Stout or Porter. Picking up flavors of grain and a bit of bitterness on the backside. Medium mouthfeel that was dry"ish" and left a bit on the palate. Smooth. Very nice mouthfeel. I thought this was a very solid beer. The more I drink German brews the better I am understanding what they are about. Of the German styles I have tried and reviewed thus far this is one of the best. It’s easily drinkable and goes down all too easy.

A very standard, basic dunkel, but does everything very well, not too sweet, not too strong, not too over the top but balanced and smooth.

This was enjoyed during the trip to München, and unfortunately no other information remains.

Aroma: Malt, coffee and tootsie roll Appearance: Brown, clear with quickly disappearing head. Flavor: Dry maltiness with a smidgeon of roastiness. Palate: Light to medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Overall: a clean refreshing dunkel with a nicely complex nose.

Aroma of toasted almonds. Taste is nutty, malty, with a small hop presence to make it refreshing.

This beer pours a clear dark copper with a thick creamy white head that left plenty of lacing around the glass. The aroma is very malty, sweet malts. I also pick up some faint hops and bread as well. The taste is very similar to the aroma. Up front you pick up the sweet malts and possibly some caramel and brown bread. On the back end you pick up a faint hop bitterness to balance out the beer. I really enjoyed this beer and highly recommend it!

500ml bottle from LCBO. 5.5% alc / vol. Pours a hazy ruby brown colour with one finger off white head. Bready lager aroma on the nose with some roasted malts. Taste is malty with a gentle hop accent and finishes with a metallic aftertaste. Medium carbonation.

Pours a gorgeous dark garnet with a moderate off white froth on top. Aroma is sweet caramel and malt with some small hop presence and slight spice. Taste is smooth and moderate body, sweet caramel with low hop bitterness and a small spice that comes in at the end.
