COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Dark beer existed in Bavaria long before light beer. This was the first type of beer to be brewed at Hofbräuhaus when it was founded. Today, when beer-lovers all over the world talk about dark beer, they usually mean a Munich style beer. Today, Hofbräu Dunkel - the archetypal Bavarian beer - is still as popular as ever. With its alcoholic content of around 5.5% volume and its spicy taste, it’s a refreshing beer that suits all kinds of occasion. A beer in the traditional Munich style!

A little on the lighter side in the mouth, bordering "watery"; malty; pretty dry ending, not the best; the spicy flavor balances very nicely with the sweet caramel flavor to make for an enjoyably complex taste; nice dark amber appearance. I recommend it.

Clear cola color with a fine head. Decent lacing. Looks ok. Medium body and a mellow carbonation level. Tad sweet and a decent bitterness. Bready, fruity and caramel in the flavor.

A fair palate. Wintery and some spice. Might not buy again. Have to get deal on it really low.

Dec 21 Advents Calendar bottle, pours a dark clear brown white head. Flavor has some apple and raisin pie, some bready caramel and molasses and hints of barnyard like a very light Doppel so there's regional character in this beer which is clearly straddling traditional and tourist expectations very well. Typical Noble hops are less annoying under the robe of sweetness and lightly earthy beauty. I could drink this any day.

Enjoyable. Light bodied, a touch on the thin side but still good palate. Mild dark malt flavors, hint of cocoa, but not esp sweet, I'd say a semi-dry, though it still mainly features it's malt profile - maybe a hint of caramel or bread. Weak nose. Brown color.

On tap at Bavarian Bier cafe, Sydney. Pours a thin cola black with a thin head. Aroma: roasted malt, brown bread, mild bitter coffee notes. Taste: Roasted malt, toasted bread, very mild caramel flavours. Roasted malt dominates the flavour balance. Thin to medium body. Moderate carbonation. Easy to drink. This is one of my favourite Dunkel beers, and best drunk by the stein!
