COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Dark beer existed in Bavaria long before light beer. This was the first type of beer to be brewed at Hofbräuhaus when it was founded. Today, when beer-lovers all over the world talk about dark beer, they usually mean a Munich style beer. Today, Hofbräu Dunkel - the archetypal Bavarian beer - is still as popular as ever. With its alcoholic content of around 5.5% volume and its spicy taste, it’s a refreshing beer that suits all kinds of occasion. A beer in the traditional Munich style!

Clear brown body with a fizzy tan head. Fairly sweet aroma of caramel and malt. Smooth entry leads to some decent carbonation on the palate. Like the aroma, the flavor is sweet overall. Caramel and toffee and just a touch of hoppy bitterness at the end. Very tasty and easy to drink.

On tap at Bavarian Bier cafe, Sydney. Pours a thin cola black with a thin head. Aroma: roasted malt, brown bread, mild bitter coffee notes. Taste: Roasted malt, toasted bread, very mild caramel flavours. Roasted malt dominates the flavour balance. Thin to medium body. Moderate carbonation. Easy to drink. This is one of my favourite Dunkel beers, and best drunk by the stein!

500 ml bottle, from Ales By Mail (despite not being an ale!). ABV is 5.5%. Dark reddish brown colour, large to moderate off-white head. Distinct malty aroma, notes of brown bread and caramel. The flavour is also distinctly malty, but slightly less sweet than expected. Again notes of brown bread and caramel. Very moderate hops.

11.2 oz. bottle. Pours a deep brown color with a quick off-white/tan head. Aroma is sweet malt with a touch of roasted malt. Medium-light body. Flavor is malt-sweet with some of the roasted malt in the background. Finish is similar to the flavor along with a little dryness.

330 ml bottle. Pours a clear mahogany with a very long lasting off-white head. The aroma is quite clean and malty, no hop oils detected. The flavor is of dark malt with a subdued bitterness. This is how you brew a traditional Munich Dunkel. For all you unfamiliar with this style, do not expect the typical raisin/prune/cocoa flavor found in almost every American dark beer. Do not expect the high viscosity and thick mouthfeel from the overuse of caramel malts. Expect, rather, a highly drinkable, refreshing beer with a dark malt accent. This is one of the finest examples of the style you will find anywhere which is meant to be enjoyed by the liter.

Bottle from Merchants. Aroma is toasted grains, dusty, earthy, metallic, light, eh. Appearance is brown, light tan head, clear. Taste is roasted, grain, wheat, metallic, some caramel, slightly earthy, lots of malt, basic. Mouthfeel is light to medium body, light carbonation, wheat and toasted grain aftertaste. Overall, very basic for the style, a little disappointing.

A new style of beer, but the dreaded green bottle gives immediate pause that is ultimately warranted. It has the skunky, unique fart smell of a green bottle beer, but it pours a nice somewhat tantalizing brown rich hue. The taste is a relatively smooth malty germanic vibe undermined by green bottle skunk. This is a real missed opportunity. Green bottles don’t do it! Good for an angry listening to of the Eagles greatest hits while deciding whether to play games or watch a movie on a lazy Monday night.

Good aroma of dark caramel. The taste is also a good caramel-malted taste with good filling. Delicious beer with good whipped aftertaste (Saaz?) That perfectly balances the malnutrition.

Bottle: Dark brown with a touch of copper. Clear with a nice head. Not a prticularly strong aroma - licorice. Nice taste - licorice and edging towards sweet but not in a balanced way. Has a good depth to it and pleasantly drinkable
