On tap at Hofbräu an der Alster in Hamburg, October 2, 2011. Hazy brownish with a medium creamy head. Quite pleasant aroma and taste, mostly malt, yeast, toffee and banana.

50cl bottle, usual label design with the Munchen brewery; colours are blue and dark brown. Writing "gebraut nach dem Deutschen Reinheitsgebot" on the label of a wheat ale could seem a bit goofy, anyway. Pours dark brown with fluent light beige (near white) head. Nose is unavoidable banana but also sweet chocolate, distant cloves; very canonic, but a bit synthetic like an industrial banana split-flavored dessert or something like that. Flavor is a bit evanescent but lingers on the "dark" side (chocolate, small licorice) for good, because the opening feels overly sweet; body is very thin and watery. Overall not a very shining example of a style I do not dig very much.

28/08 0.33 l bottle from Coop store, Gradisca d’Isonzo. It poured hazy brown body with medium to bigger brownish head. Sweetish caramel aroma, extremely cloying, along with wheat notes of bubblegum and banana. Finely sweet caramel yeasty flavor, banana, touch of coffee, plums... Full bodied with long caramel and sugary finish. Slightly acidic at this point. A nice dunkelweizen, no doubt, but a bit too sweet and cloying for my taste.

Poured a brown-amber body, misty with a huge, lasting off white head. Full, sweet, bubblegumy lactic nose, very light coffee too. Extremely creamy banana taste, müsli, banana and did I mention banana? Light, acidic finish. Ooooh yeah!

On draught at Hofbräuhaus Las Vegas. The beer pours dark amber-brown with a medium foamy beige head that recedes slowly. Rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of bready malt, wheat and bananas. Medium body with flavors of caramel malt, banana, roasted grain and a touch of spice. The finish is toasty malt with a sweet caramel aftertaste. Decent overall.

50cl bottle Pours a stunning damson colour, with shades of gold and pink around a purple/brown centre. There are steady bubbles and a nice generous head -perfect. The nose has over-ripe pears and caramel. The taste has toffee-apple, then pears again. After all that, the palate is a little lighter in the start and middle sections than expected. A nice clean finish though. Overall, a very nice dunkel, though it may have been monumental, had the palate been a bit more chunky.

On tap at Bierhaus NYC. Pours a dark reddish brown with creamy khaki head. Aroma has moderate yeast and wheat. Flavor is similar with a touch of white sugar sweetness. Fairly mild and more like a standard weizen. Where’s the dunkel?

ALLOVATE (3063) - Perth, AUSTRALIA - JUL 12, 2011
Erupts up the glass on the pour to settle with a billowing off white-pad that lifts like a plume from the rim. Finely misted, the body a copper tinged chestnut in colour with a lot of tight, fine carbonation. Leaves rings of suds as it empties. Mild sherryish note comes through an otherwise wheaty, dusty cocoa and caramelised banana nose. Tangy, slightly sour malty palate with just a shy hint of sweet caramel upfront. Smoky phenols, clove-like in back, gritty, rough grain mid-palate with little in the swallow, finishing clean and crisp. Quite light in body, a little watery when tasted chilled, filling out as it warms. Notes of rust and cola begin to linger on the tongue late as does just a smidgeon of banana. A little too straightforward, but made for easy drinking. (50cL, BB 23/11/11, The Beer Store Morley)
