Bottle from the hog’s back brewery shop in Tongham. Pours deep mahogany with a small tan head. Flavours are sweet with fruit cake, sherry and something a little woody. Maybe just a slight vegetable note, but otherwise very good. Marko (6275) - Split / Zagreb, CROATIA - MAY 10, 2017
UPDATED: MAY 10, 2017 Dark brown body, tiny light tan head. Aroma... Chocolate, good maltiness, light raisin, caramel, lovely! Mild dry malty body caramel, light tart touch, fruity, just a tad soapy. Fresh. Nice enough and yes, tasty. Not a world beater but a very beer nonetheless, just slightly too thin. leaparsons (10859) - Wigston, Leicestershire, ENGLAND - OCT 26, 2002
A very dark beer with a rich biscuit malt body along with smokey toffee notes - one for bonfire night perhaps. There is also a slightly vinous character. This is a little thin in the mouthfeel but still pleasant. rickgordon (3878) - Göteborg, SWEDEN - APR 8, 2007
Dark ruby colour. No head. Bit toasty in aroma with milk chocolate and fruits. Very flavourful with caramel, dried fruits and milk chocolate. Medium bodied. Good hoppiness in flavour with nice lasting bitterness.

Handpulled cask at JDW Hatch End, Harrow. I found this beer far too sweet to start with but as I reached the end of the pint I found myself really enjoying it as multi layered flavours came through. Very good strong dark ale. Christian (13927) - Odense, DENMARK - DEC 18, 2009
Dark brown with a small off-white head. Aroma of fruit and raisin, with a vineous sherry note. Sweet dried fruit flavour with a roast note larsga (7675) - Oslo, NORWAY - MAY 5, 2010
Medium brown head. Barely translucent dark red body. Fruity mealy roasty aroma with earthy metallic notes. Dry-sweetish earthy wild berry taste with roasty chocolatey notes. Mid-bodied. Mild mouthfeel. Dryish soy and roasty malts aftertaste with chocolatey herbal notes. very nice. Like a craft beer, but beautifully balanced. (0.5l bottle, RealAle.com.) Cask @ Bree Louise, London. RBESG 2011. Pours ruby amber with no head. Nutty and fruity. Dark fruit. Toffe and caramel. Rich and smooth. Davros (3338) - Melbourne, AUSTRALIA - SEP 13, 2011
Pours black with a small tan head.
Nose shows chocolate, caramel, roasted malt, prunes, golden syrup, brown sugar and bready malt. Pretty nice stuff.
Similar flavours with lots more roasted malt, chocolate, golden syrup and sweet, sugary dried fruit. A bit cloying, and there’s an off-putting chalky/doughy note.
Body feels a little watery.
