3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
UPDATED: JUL 21, 2013 cask. Mother Fuggles version. cloudy straw gold body with a thick, fine-bubbled white head. heavily yeasty nose with strong vitamin B and sulfur notes; burnt match sticks even come to mind, and the yeast mutes the otherwise nice mango and lemon pith and rind hop notes, which aren’t what I expect from Fuggles but the hop aromatics are enjoyable nonetheless. flavor-wise the problems continue as the malt seems under-fermented and wort-like and the hop bitterness is strongly out of balance. yeast isn’t as dominant as the nose, allowing the malt and hops more room to play, but it is still very vitamin B-like (Jeff would looooove this one) and sulfuric and that’s hard for me to get past. there is a small hint of English ale yeasty mustiness but I don’t get the spicy, earthy character of Fuggles. instead there’s a lot of astringent citrus rind and pith (which was also very evident in the Lake Lightning simcoe dry-hopped version) and with the malt being somewhat flabby it’s just too out of balance to make up for the overt yeastiness. so, medium-light body, medium-low sweetness, light to moderate hop astringency, smooth malt texture but flabby support (a lot of chewiness and the carbonation gives it no vibrancy or uplift to make up). sadly I could not finish half of the glass. I’ve had yeasty firkins from Hogshead before, it’s only been an occasional thing, so hopefully the next one from this batch will be in better shape.
Cask at the brewpub. Golden orange color with a low head. Spicy English hop nose, caramel. Thin and light, a bit weak in flavor, but it is a bitter. Ok hops. Decent. Marheb (5898) - San Diego, California, USA - MAY 13, 2016

Clear medium amber yellow color with a small to average, frothy, good to fair lacing, mostly diminishing, off-white to white head. Aroma is moderate malty, caramel, pale malt, moderate hoppy, fruity hops, light peach - apricot. Flavor is moderate sweet and bitter with a average to long duration, marmalade hops, fruity hops, malty, pinr. Body is medium, texture is oily to watery, carbonation is soft to flat.
On tap at the brewery. Amber and clear appearance with a lacy off-white head. Nice aroma of tropical fruits, citrus and zesty hops. The flavor is more malty with light cookie, toffee and caramel notes. Creamy and soft feel with a light resinous bitterness, slightly unpleasant. Just OK for me. yespr (46519) - Copenhagen O, DENMARK - DEC 30, 2014
