Holgate annual release.
A beer named in homage to Brick Kiln Road in Holgate’s hometown of Woodend, which was where founders Paul and Natasha had the inspiration to open a brewery while out rambling, it’s one inspired by the dark wheats of Bavaria. It pours such a deep brown that the punch of the candy bananas on the nose is quite surprising, the sweet milk chocolate malt flavours that follow less so. There’s the faintest hint of tartness to finish in what’s otherwise a rich, sweet, almost dessert like beer that’s now out in 500ml bottles.

From a bottle. Pleasant roasted aroma, pours dark, bitter chocolate flavours, smooth with a lingering coffee aftertaste. I like it!

Dark roasted malt and toasty aroma. Black colour with ok head. Nice malty flavour with some banana hints. Medium body and carbonation ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle from Slowbeer (purchased Dec 2012). Clear dark brown, thin off-white head, chocolate, caramel, banana bread, brown sugar, slight yeast funk, medium sweetness, light bitterness, medium body. Pretty nice, easy drinking, enjoyed it.

500ml brown bottle as "Brick Kiln Wheat". Label states 5.3% ABV. Pours an opaque very dark brown into the glass with a medium beige head. I get a strong peanut aroma with roasted caramel malts and a soft smoky presence. Palate is medium bodied with a fullish mouthfeel but it is not nearly sweet enough in favour to be truly representative of the style. There is a rather unpleasant smoky bacon aftertaste which really shouldn’t be there in my opinion. Lacks the estery yeast presence (banana, clove etc) of the best German Dunkels (which are cheaper to buy over here than this). I am aware that this runs counter to most other reviews so I am prepared to accept that this was an off bottle.

Aroma smells of bricks ironically, slightly earthy and clay-like, but with malts too. Appearance is a transparent brown with medium head. Taste is sweet carrot, malt, and toffee flavours, slightly estery. Palate is pleasant with a mild bitter tang.

500ml bottle. Black in colour with tan foam on top. Caramel, toffee, vanilla and malt in the aroma while the beer is light on the palate and in the mouth. Good interpretation of the style. Well rounded beer with a nice long finish.

Is nice to just appreciate a beer and every sip was such a good feeling in your mouth another great beer from Holgate

Pours dark brown with a small head. Banana and doughy wheat are prominent in the aroma along with some caramel and brown sugar. Textbook dunkelweizen aroma really. Flavours instead focus on nutty malt with some banana showing later, along with some wheat. Carbonation is a little too high.

Draught sample. Clear dark appearance with a decent thick head. Plenty of aroma with hints of sweet banana and clove. Smooth round palate with malts coming thought mid palate, too sweet for my liking but can see why others might like it.
