Terrific straw-coloured beer with a fresh, hoppy aroma and a well rounded, malty flavour with an intense bitterness which leads to an excellent long, dry finish. Winner of numerous, prestigious awards, most notably Best Strong Bitter at The Great British Beer Festival in 1992/93.
Ingredients: Optic pale malt. East Kent Goldings and Challenger hops (The bottled version uses EKG only).

UPDATED: MAY 30, 2010 Cask. Slightly hazy, orange/golden beer with a small white head. The aroma is mostly citrus, with a dishwashing-soap like twist, but not in an un-pleasant way. The flavor is almost nothing but citrus. Thin and soapy mouthfeel and an astringent and slightly sour finish. Way too much citrus to suit my taste. Rating: 5-3-5-2-10-2.5. 060713

Bottle. A hazy, golden beer topped by a decent white head. Citrusy nose, citrus peel mostly, and a base of pale malts. The flavor has pale malts to support the citrusy bitterness. Some notes of blackcurrant chime in too. Good bitterness in the end. Medium body. Overall, a quenching and quite nice beer, but not my choice of hops. 091226

Cask at C4, Odense: orange with little white foam. Smooth, flat, thin, light, floral, hoppy, malty, bitter grassy.! OK drinkable!

Cask. Pale yellow colour, small white head. Pleasant enough, light-flavoured ale.

bhensonb (15958) - Woodland, California, USA - JUL 12, 2006
Flowery hop aroma Cloudy golden color, white head and tiny bubbles. Light malty start, biting carbonation (like champagne), and a decent hop finish. Very clean, very fresh.

Ratman197 (15604) - Arvada, Colorado, USA - JUN 19, 2008
500 ml bottle poured a clear gold with a small lasting creamy white head. Aromas of straw, graininess, light spice and light citrus. Palate was light to medium bodied and smooth with a dry finish. Flavors of straw, light spice and a hint of citrus with a dry lingering bitter finish.

UPDATED: JUN 27, 2006 Cask Conditioned. How disapointing that I am marking this, one of the better pale ales, after having it at a local Wetherspoons. O.k the pub has a cask marque but that means nothing now, the Landlord that earned the award for this Macpub has long gone (the power of money I suppose!!) Anyway, it was flat and lifeless as MacP beers tend to be. How is it that a chain like this can promise great beers then serve them so badly? If I were Hop Back I would stop Wetherspoons having any of their beer (is that a pig flying past the window?) que sera.
Re Rate - Horse & Jockey, Bodicote. This is as it should be, Light body but excellent bitterness and biscuity maltiness. Good quaffing beer but with strength.

Bottle. Poured clear straw with an average frothy white head that was mostly lasting with good lacing. Medium sweet hoppy aroma. Medium body. Medium sweet flavor with a small bitter finish of moderate duration. My expectations were met.

Drake (14332) - Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA - SEP 26, 2009
500 mL bottle from Peace Street Market in Raleigh, NC. Pours a hazy lemon yellow color with a large frothy white head. Good head retention and lacing. A thin layer of sediment that looks like sand at the bottom of the glass. Fruity, floral citrus hop aroma. Some grain and faint stone fruit notes. Taste is caramel, stone fruits, grain. Smooth, a bit chalky, medium bodied. Decent beer.
