COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our entry in Nelson’s Marchfest 2014, this varietal IPA features a relatively new local hop, Rakau. Its delicate nose and tropical fruit flavours combine elegantly with Gladfield malts from Canterbury in a refreshing apricot-coloured beer with a rounded, bittersweet finish.

500ml bottle hazy amber with OK head. Aroma of grapefruit, pine & lemon. Medium bitterness. Biscuit malt taste with more pine in the palate. Decent.

Very hazy deep amber beer, thin cream colour head. Filthy hop nose - garlic and old socks. Palate is light, mildly dry and fairly crisp. Very modest sweetness from the thin malts. Hops follow the nose! The filth dies away a little as the beer goes from very cold to cool. A slight earthyness emerges and a touch of spicy tropical fruits. Mild floralness. Light dry finish. Starts filthy and gets interesting. Yet to have a better Rakau single hop IPA than that of Kernel though.

Malt on the front subtle tasty hops at the back. The Rakau hops have a dry fruit characteristic.

500ml bottle from Hop Federation tasting room. Somewhat hazy golden copper with a one finger white head. Aroma is weak, metallic, slightly tropical. Flavor is somewhat watery, light pale malts with a not so fresh tasting (when it literally came from the freaking brewery one day earlier!) hop flavor. Some tropical. Palate is weak, with some lively carbonation redeeming IT somewhat. Sorry guys but this is gaaahb. DPed it.

UPDATED: JUL 8, 2016 Pint at Vultures’ Lane. Really quite refreshing, there’s hops but they aren’t taking centre stage.

[8363-20160525] Bottle. Evergreen pine resin and mild biscuit aroma. Slightly hazy, orange body with a medium-lasting foamy white head. Grainy evergreen resin flavour. Medium body. Fairly bitter and grainy. (6/3/6/3/13) 3.1-

2016-05-26. Hazy amber body modest beige head. 3+ Aroma is a bit grassy and earthy. Flavour is fairly bitter throughout. Odd sort of earthy not quite cardboardy undertone. Cereal malt, light undertones of burnt malt. Average bodied palate, good carbonation. Okay but not as good as some of their others, or at least less to my own taste. 6/3/6/3/14 Bottle from Hop Federation, Riwaka, NZ.

Murky looking ale - smells dank - tastes more malty than Lime-ish hoppy with a tart aftertaste and some slight bitterness - kinda odd and not for me.

there is a lot going on here the aroma is a bit musky? piny malty tropical fruit & hops tastes quite dry & busy lots of citrus hops & a solid malty background great blend thoroughly enjoyed

3.2
hawthorne00 (4191) - Melbourne, AUSTRALIA - JAN 20, 2016
Bottle. Clear mid amber with a modest whit head. The nose is not delicate at all: quite a lot of pine, some toasty caramel, apricot, some herbs. Light bodied - a bit thin for 5.7% really. Lowish carbonation. Pine is a lot less prominent after that first sniff. Toasty and not that sweet with tropical and stone fruit, flowers. Gently drying and moderately bitter finish. Odd beer - the first whiff seemed rambunctiously hoppy and then it all rather subsided after that. The malt side of things seemed more suited to an amber lager than an IPA and overmatched the hop aromatics and bitterness.
