Cletus (6368) - Connecticut, USA - MAR 1, 2011
Draught at Cask Republic. Pours dark brown with a creamy grayish tan head. Smells slightly smoky, roasty, resiny, earthy, spicy. Tastes of roasted malt, some tea, peppery, full bodied with a slight chocolatey finish. Nice!

In short: A round creamy stout and a lot of green bitter hops in perfect harmony
How: Tap, a few times. This rating for a fresh pint directly at the brewery
The look: Black body topped by a medium tan head
In long: Nose is very hoppy with a green fresh hops pellet signature on top of moderately roasted malts. Body is slender yet doughy and a bit fluffy. Roasted malts, oatmeal sensation (I don’t know if it actually uses oatmeal), burnt harzelnuts, some dried dark fruits and a whole lot of fresh green bitter hops. With its velvety body, hopping and round smooth flavors I thought it felt like some kind of uber-hoppy oatmeal stout. I liked it a lot. This beer was brewed in honor of Greg Noonan, a North-American brewing pioneer. Everybody dies, even beer people. R.I.P. Greg Noonan, Vermont Brewery founder (1951 – 2009). R.I.P. Michael Jackson, beer hunter (1942-2007). R.I.P. Bruno Baekelmans, founder and brewer of Breughel (1959 - I Can’t Wait).

Tap at Paradiso Dupont. The pour is near black with a healthy, tan head with great retention and layered lace. Aroma is big sweet cocoa, vanilla, sweet roasted malt. Taste is roasty, coffee, hazelnut, dark fruit-forward with excellent roast and low-alpha acid hops to balance. Heavy, moderately sweet body makes me think this is a milk stout of sorts with quite the char and roast to balance. Silky, creamy on the palate. Soft carbonation. A very nice surprise. Thank god for stouts without saltwater and olive character.

A deep dark stout with a thin dark brown head. A superb dark coffee aroma, with bitter chocolate notes, light fruityness, some chalky notes. In mouth, a good intense coffee, light alcohol warmth, hops points, some licorice and light menthol. Rich and smooth. On tap at brewery, Dec. 4 2010.

My Bottom Line:
Raisins, roasted malts and levelled green hops coalesce in this full-bodied, Harvest Ale / Foreign Stout.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A layer of creamy foam protects the brown-edged blackness.
-The cask version had brash hoppiness compared to the slightly older tap. The cask was not cohesive too, even though the flavors were all very pleasant.
-Balance is beautiful in this one, evolving in a wonderfully chewy body.
-Yet another successful new recipe from Hopfenstark. Bravo!

On tap at the brewery, and on cask at Benelux.

Cask at ’Volo Cask Days 2010’ . Pours a very dark brown, almost black, with a small diminishing bubbly tan head. Lovely hoppy & roasty aroma. Flavour of leafy green hops, lightly roasted dark malt and hints of coffee and nuts. Nice bitter finish. Medium to full bodied. Awesome!

(Rating #3377)

UPDATED: DEC 23, 2010 Tap at Volo (in cask). Great beer. Aromas of grain, caramel, and chocolate. Taste is sweet, with bitter notes. Palate is syrupy, with a full body. Black, with a head that disappears. Re-rate: Tap at Saint-Bock brewery. Aromas of roasted coffee, grass, chocolate. Taste has a sweet start, with bitterness taking over for a long finish. Velvety, with a medium-to-full body. Black, with a frothy head.

[3443-20101029] Cask. Very mild spicy leaf aroma. Hazy, dark brown black body with quick bubbles. Lots of mid-tone notes in the flavour, nothing comes out in particular. Full body. Not bad.
(Cask Days @ Volo, Toronto, ON)

Diogène (1214) - Mirabel, Quebec, CANADA - NOV 22, 2010
On cask at Benelux. Pitch black with a thin mocha head. Aroma is citrus, chocolate, herbs and roasted malt. Flavor is coffee, chocolate, roasted malt, sugar and a lot of citrusy hops (probably dry-hopped, as it was not the most bitter). Medium to full body with an oily mouthfeel.
