500 ml bottle from brewery via Lubiere (merci!), served at cellar temperature in a tulip glass. Hand-written label. AP20/08.

App.: Cloudy medium-amber with a large off-white foam. Aroma: Much like a dubbel – some raisins, molasses, toffee, licorice; lots of bubblegum esters (too much, me thinks), minty, sweet-smelling with a slightly saison-esque funk; some yeast and bread dough. Palate: Medium+ body and very soft effervescence. Flav.: Much like the nose – thick, gooey malts, heavy-handed pink bubblegum, minty, a touch of funk, a bit nutty; off-dry, a bit tangy and a little bitter with a peachy aftertaste.

Perplexing – Dubbel meets Saison...Daison? Subbel? Not sure if I like the results of this experiment, particularly due to the bubblegum esters. Might retry.

A 25.4 ounce bottle acquired in a trade with MatrinT. Thanks. I shared this one with my brother. Sweet, musty, dusty yeast notes present with prenty of esters. This is not as sweet as the Hennepin that is also a part of this tasting. Mildly hazy honey colored body with a long-lasting medium white head. Starts a bit metallic with some astringency present as well. Some yeasty esters follow, which are not overbearing. Plenty of doughy flavors in the middle, followed by some nice husky, chewy, grainy flavors. This has a lightly grassy and metallic hop finish. Quality stuff.

Cloudy orangey golden pour with a thin offwhite head. Nice aroma of yeast and fruits. Good flavor of yeast, bread, fruits and some sweetness. The body is medium with a creamy texture and moderate carbonation. Another very good saison from Hopfenstark, keep ’em coming!

Pours a cloudy light straw yellow with a small white top. Aroma is spicy rye, yeast, a little hop. Taste is a nice warming dry, spicy rye, yeast and a great bready malt profile. Slight hop bitterness in the aftertaste.

Sweet earthy saison. Aroma almost has some lactic notes with tons of earthy bready Malta. Yeasty as all get up. Basement, earth and leaves. Soft carb and thin palate.

Bottle shared by Drew. Thanks! Pours a paler gold with a big white head that falls. Nose is full of citrus. Also some black tea and orange blossom. Clean pils and vanilla. On tasting, it’s a bit flabby. Peach and vanilla, more tea and citrus. Medium bitterness but has a pilsner sweetness that keeps it from drying out. Solid but not quite there.

Draught (6 oz. sample) at Vices et Versa, Montreal. Hazy golden colour. Lovely aroma of herbs, apricot, and an odd hint of whiskey - probably from the rye. Flavour is quite herbal as well, with notes of orange and lemon, a faint yeasty funkiness, and a hint of pepper in the finish. Very nice!

On tap at the brewery, during their grand opening, Hazy amber-orange hue, with a very small beige head, yeasty dough, fruity nose of ripe apples, hint of nutmeg spiciness, a bit wheaty, with a subtle rye cereal note in the aroma follows through on a medium-bodied palate with a yeasty, fruity character of sultana, ripe apples, with a flowery hop accent, a nutmeg spiciness, an orangeish rye mouthfeel, leading towards a fruity, malty finish.

(printemps 2007)
