Bu au Vices et Versa en fut (12 oz). Brune noisette brumeuse, petit collet. Arome de fruits épicé, style mince meat. Goût de fruits sucré, un peu peu d’épice, très malté. VT (2527) - Quebec City, Quebec, CANADA - DEC 28, 2012
750 ml bottle. Pours a foggy ruby red brown with a very short-lasting pale beige head. Smell is chocolate, caramel, cloves, cinnamon and honey. taste is caramel, cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon. But especially nutmeg. Tons of it. Finish is mostly honey, very little bitterness. May somewhat lack in balance. Thick bodied, unctuous mouthfeel. Very weak carbonation. An excellent Christmas beer. rodenbach99 (4572) - Longueuil, Quebec, CANADA - DEC 14, 2008
UPDATED: JUN 30, 2011 This rating is for the aged version (3 years) sampled at Hopfenstark’s 3rd anniversary. Color is muddy brown with a medium head and average retention. Aroma is very spicy with nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger, culin cloves toasted malt, cookies, molasses and herbs. Flavor is similar to the aroma, but a little sweeter than expected and a bit more hops. Medium body with a liquorous mouthfeel. A nice warming winter brew. Sampled hot at Winter warmer Montreal this was a masterpiece.
The newly brewed version is a totally different beer, much thiner than this one, with less complexity and way too much culin cloves. Rating for the new one would be lower.

On tap at Vices & Versa. The color is a hazy dark brown with a beige head and nice lace. The aroma is of mincemeat, the taste is also of mincemeat and spicies but not over done. There is also a nice bitter sweet finish to it. This would be a good beer for Christmass. Fred82 (2331) - Québec City, Quebec, CANADA - NOV 29, 2009
On tap at Host 3rd anniv. 3 years old. Pours deep amber. Nose of cloves and cinamon. Very very spicy. Taste is big cloves with cinnamon. Again, very spicy. This is a very tasty christmass beer. It can be the perfect fix if you are in the mood for it. A bit unidimensional. It is the kind of beer you like to have one or two around for when you really feel like drinking one. UPDATED: NOV 17, 2008 Second try, from the newly bottled 2008 batch:rederic (3341) - montréal, Quebec, CANADA - JAN 23, 2007
The dessert spices are all admirably blended into the silky, smooth and rich mouthfeel created by well-levelled dextrins. Black grapes burst and honeyed sweetness beautifully support the cloves, cinnamon and nutmeg which all sing in unison. A coniferous touch also whispers within. Carbonation is rather polite, but this remains a mighty fine Christmas ale.3.6/5
First try on tap at Vices et Versa:
Any first impressions?
-A ring of foam circles the purpled ruby.
-Nutmeg, cinnamon, and cloves titillate the nose, though never in an exaggerated fashion; if dessert spices aren’t your thing though, you’ll probably hate this.
-The spice-accented flavor profile sifts into a grape and hibiscus juice quenchability.
-This has quite a lean body for its gravity, increased by effective effervescence.
What if you dig deeper?
-Baked bread can be hallucinated, although it is a very healthy version.
-Roastiness is found towards the end, again with those dessert spices.
-Rather drinkable for its size, the mouthfeel seems to be between juicy and vinous.
-Spices are important in this Christmas ale, but they never get tiresome; another well-brewed Hopfenstark beer! For some reason, I’d like to try this mulled...3.3/5
On tap at Vices&Versa, hazy dark mahogany hue, with a small tan-colored head, spicy nose of cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, with a hint of acidic fruitiness, toasted malt, fruitcake in the aroma follows through on a medium-bodied palate with a yeasty, intense spicy character of cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, even with a note of sassafras, with a caramelized ripe apples accent, hints of black chocolate and dark dried fruit of dates, plums, leading towards a a spicy malty warmth alcoholic finish.
