Poured into my trusty snifter. Jet black body with a very dark 1 finger head The suds is composed of relatively large bubbles, which isn’t really conducive to retention or lacing. Not a problem for a stout. The aroma here is strikingly potent. Rich, sweet chocolate and a soft, fruity alcohol note combine to become extremely appetizing. I may be crazy but the harder I inhale, the more the fruitiness attenuates to a honeydew note. The flavor is intensely chocolatey, with an impeccable roasty coffee/oat bitterness in the finish. The balance is sublime. The alcohol is almost entirely unapparent but I can detect it’s subtle sharpness under the chocolate. This beer is incredibly smooth. The body is luxuriously full, with just the right amount of carbonation. The mouthfeel is amazingly clean relative to the body, and the bitterness creates a wonderfully dry finish. Spectacular beer. One of those ones that you would kill to have available locally.

Draft at Hop Devil Grill. Black pour with a small brown head. Aroma is like an ordinary porter; a little lactic with light roasted malt. Flavor is somewhat better; roasted chocolate malt, semi-sweet, but sort of high carbonation. Coffee / roasted finish.

Bomber. Ink black pour with slight crimson edging. Foamy tan head, thick sticky lace. Roast, sweet malt, coffee, and chocolate on the nose. Faint wisp of alcohol. Flavors of sweet malt with coffee/dark chocolate bitterness. Slight hop presence. Medium to full mouthfeel. Chocolatey bitter finish. Tasty for dessert or a good warmer on a cold evening.

dark tawny/light brown thin creamy head, blackish brown body. aroma is coffee, cocoa, dark chocolate, and some prune. maybe a little vanilla in the aroma too. flavor starts bitter roasted malt, then some baking chocolate and hoppy bitterness. very low alcohol heat, just a bit warming in the finish. malt is a bit sweet & chocolatey in the middle. sweeter malt finish too. thanks Dickinsonbeer for this as a generous gift!

UPDATED: FEB 3, 2008 Draft at HDG. The flavor has burnt licorice, cherry, piney hops, coffee and roasty malts. Mouthfeel is smooth. Much better in the bottle.

22 oz bottle. Dark black with a thin tan head. Aroma was very roasty. Smooth drinking, hid the alcohol well behind roasty / coffee flavors. Really good.

StFun (567) - Indiana, USA - JAN 29, 2008
UPDATED: APR 6, 2009 There is a slight taste of oatmeal and coffee on the backend, but the main flavor is pretty average for an IS.Alcohol% is only 9.4, but this brew burned all the way down. Almost no aroma, and the appearance looked like, welllight brown water. My drinking partner really liked this, so it was probably just me, but I got bored with this about half way through.

Had a bomber of this and liked it for a while. I soon became tired of it about halfway through as the flavor didn’t really develop. Definitely not a traditional oatmeal stout.
