UPDATED: FEB 22, 2013 Pours a pretty clear very dark black color with a small head. Aroma is mostly roasted malt with some chocolate and coffee. Taste is very smooth and pretty bitter. Not a whole lot of hops really except for the bitterness and slight spiciness they provide. Mouthfeel is pretty thin but creamy. It’s like a thin imperial stout really. Bomber from bittermestupid. Thanks Greg! Pours really dark with a creamy bubbly tan head. Aroma of chocolate and resin. Full bodied. It starts a bit sweet, and some chocolate is present. Then there’s some fairly smooth burnt malt and a hint of coffee. Not to mention there seems to be a lot of resin hop. It’s certainly drier than not, but the chocolate confuses the issue. So does the burnt malt. This is pretty complex, and I think it’s very bitter. Very good ale.

Damn, Chris, you really love Black IPAs, huh? Poured a starchy, swarthy chestnut purple-brown into snifter with 55% carbonation which was tannish khaki in color. Smells of pitched California yeast, plum syrup, roast, hops and sidelined with a nice booming boozy fragrance. Word. Tastes of durum, wheat flour, olives, fennel, char, hops and brown sugar. Ends bitter and with a slight artificial molasses characteristic. Booze is favorable in this beer, as well.

Dark black in color, clear with a thin head. Nice dark malt and lots of awesome hops aroma and flavors. Good chocolate and great hops flavors. Very tasty CDA.

A three-way vertical between Lakefront IBA (India-Style Black Ale), Three Heads Skunk Black IPA, and Hoppin Frog Hop Heathen Imperial Black Ale.

Bottle and served in one of my numerous Duvel snifters: Appearance: All three have basically the same color, very deep brown nearly opaque. The difference is head retention with the Three Heads maintaining a fluffy head and producing the best lacework (5). The Lakefront had a slight better head and spotty lace (3) versus the Hop Hopping Frog which left almost no lace on the glassware (2).

The nose: Resiny, bile, oniony hops with some pale chocolate and roast for the Lakefront. Juicy, grassy, piney and a tad faint hop with a dusty roasted malt note for the Skunk. The Hop Heathen is most unique for sure with a grapefruity, piney and smoky earthy malt vapour. Almost meaty and oh so earthy. I love the aroma of the Hopping Frog (9), while the Three Heads is tame and weak but not offensive (7) and the Lakefront has the oniony, garlic, and catty overtones I do not care much for (5).

The taste profiles: We start with the Hop Heathen this time and I get quite a bit of heavy resin, pine sap, and some of the catty high alpha notes that were much more noticeable on the aroma of the Lakefront. There is a nice roasted and slight smoked, leathery, tobacco, liquorice undertones as well for the Hoppin Frog. It is complex for the genre, perhaps too much so. (7). The Skunk has more a basic fruity, piney, and cardboardy taste. Much like the aroma this beer is tame and weak compared to the other two. Even the finish is far too short (5). The Lakefront has a nice bitterness but is still not quite as aggressive as I would like, a bit too malty (but not sweet). Coffee and earth are pronounced with this beer. (6)

Mouth feel/Palate: Start with the Three Heads Shunk this time: Lively enough, too much (which explains the lasting head), over carbonated, thin, ashy, short. Not all that good (2) The HFHHIBA (haha) is aggressive, biting, a tad boozy, and a tad medicinal. This one suffers from being the one that is a tad under-carbonated. (3). Then there is the Lakefront IBA which a bit thin and a bit over carbonated as well. There is a minerally and metallic quality about this I found a bit off-putting (2). Wow, NONE OF THESE are clean nor properly carbonated, either over or under. All have major flaws on the palate IMO. <insert sad face emotion here>:

Final Verdict: None of the beers are something I would buy again. Each failed to meet expectations. Each are classic examples of when a brewer attempts the "next big thing" without a clue on what they are doing. (Remind me not to but a Berliner Weiss from any of these three breweries.). Off to find a good beer and dump the remainder of these bomber, such a waste of my time and monies.

Good beer, Pours dark like a Porter or Stout with a nice creamy tan head that lingers. Smells like a chocalatey IPA, nice even heavy hop and heavy malt character Tastes hoppy and chocolates, some bready notes. Some sweetness with mild coffee. Really nice. A little on the watery side, but it holds up to its other characteristics A good beer thru and thru.

Bottle from secret santa. Pour has a very dark chestnut color and a thin covering of tan head. Aroma has roasted malt, pines, coffee, chocolate, and light resins. Mouth feel coats nicely and is far heftier than expected with medium high carbonation. Flavor confirms the lean to the maltier side, chocolate, coffee, roast, pine, some bitterness, and a lingering finish. A lot of beers in the style are ipa’s with some dark malt thrown in for color but this has a hefty malted core put up against a dose of hops.

DocLock (10745) - Lower Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, USA - JUL 24, 2012
Bomber from MC Hammer, otherwise known as Dr. of Fermentation Engineering Matt Capone. Pours blacker than black (I want my baby back), with minimal clingy khaki head. Nose is huge piney resiny hops, roasty dark malt, plum. Tastes roasty black patent malty, somewhat charred, with mid-palate resiny hops. The IBUs continue until the finish, taking top billing from the malt somewhat. As it warms, more resiny piney hops emerge, with the malt maintaining a solid balance.

PhillyCraft (7417) - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA - JUL 23, 2012
Bottle, pours a dark brown color with small to medium khaki head. Excellent lacing streaks. Aromas of roasted malt, smoked wood, cocoa, caramel and citrus from the hops. Taste is smoked malts, spicy wood, grapefruit, and coffee. Light carbonation with a medium body. Had a slight bitter ending but mostly smooth and warming.

tcane7 (1674) - Pennsylvania, USA - JUL 23, 2012
22 oz bottle from Capones. Pours dark brown with thin mocha head and solid lacing. Nose of floral, piney and citrus hops, with roasted coffee notes. Taste of grapefruit and pine with a smooth chocolate and roasted coffee finish. Pretty smooth somewhat thick mouthfeel.
