Bottle. This is not what I expected at all. First sign that something was off was the bubblegummy banana yeast in the nose. Had to check the bottle... was this some sort of Belgian-Scottish blend? No. Oops. Through the banana, toasted caramel malt is present in the nose as well as some actual caramel. Flavor is a little sticky, sweet and a tad unbalanced. Tastes syrupy, and not very carbonated... almost more toward a cider than a beer. Finishes with a hint of banana over a very weak bitterness. Is something wrong here? I didn’t taste the 8.2%.
December 27th, 2014 - Breaking out Hoppin’ Frog was an acknowledgment that this is a much deserved break from my PhD program. Expensive and decadent, this is a treat for a special occasion, and coming out of Christmas and headed to the New Year, I must have been celebrating the meridian between two holidays. Red and hazy, the pour looks thick, though not as diesel fuel like as the same brewery’s Imperial Stouts and similarly dark beers. After a tilt and a roil I go in for the smell, which is quite strong, pushing forward with an inescapable force of caramel and a touch pine. I also get a little cough medicine, but not enough to be alarming or discomforting. The flavor is more unconventional than the nose, and not at all what I was expecting. More tangy than sweet, it’s very different from most scotch ales, exhibiting all the same caramel and general oozing booziness but far less sweet about it. The palate is also lighter and tangier, more like a light citrus fruit, such as a tangerine, mixed with a raw, juicy orange slice. The alcohol *is* present but is rather modest. mice (993) - FINLAND - JUN 29, 2017
0,65l bottle from Beergium. Dark copper clear beer with medium natural white head. Aroma has lots of sweet malts and caramel, some berries and hints of alcohol. Taste has sweet malts, caramel, berries. Long ending is sweet and alcoholic. Medium+ body, sweet and maybe a bit too alcoholic, but still tasty beer. Mister_Li (1488) - GERMANY - APR 12, 2017

Bomber. Murky toffee with an average khaki head that leaves little lacing. Aroma is caramel, toffee, smoky malts, and a bit of whisky. Taste is full of caramel and toffee sweetness with malts, citrus, bread, and a sweet finish. Average thickness and sweet.

22 ounce bottle from Sonoma Cellars in Delavan, WI, served at cellar temp in a Maudite glass. Smallish off-white head recedes quickly to a thin ring topping a vaguely hazy copper-bronze body...sweet vanilla-caramel aroma, little in the way of smokiness or peat (this is the second SA in a row I’ve had with this aromatic profile - both have been nice for nosing, but give me some reminder of Ardbeg!); hints of pie spices (cinnamon, clove) become evident with warmth...slightly less sweet to the tongue than might have been expected, but still more than a little sugary at first, becoming just a touch drier and bitter/burnt towards the finish...somewhat more alcoholic than it might be - I’d guess this was closer to 10% - and the body is a little vapid, though acceptable; carbonation is just slightly on the high side. Overall a perfectly reasonable and decent-drinking Scotch but nothing special really. Bawelt (874) - Lyon, FRANCE - NOV 8, 2016
1pt 6fl oz shared bottle at home from FirmaBier. Nose is dried fruits, dark berries, caramel, plum, light bourbon. Body is dark reddish deep brown. Aroma is dark berries, raisin, caramel, biscuits, milk chocolate, herbs, wet old wood. Medium sweet, light bitter, light fruity sour. Finish is medium lasting roasty fruity medium bittersweet. Full body, oily sticky texture, average carbonation. Easy dessertish beer, strong flavor, bit out of balance but very tasty, great one. JPDIPSO (6257) - Wauwatosa, USA - AUG 25, 2016
Small, diminishing beige head, that leaves just a thin cover above the near copper colored liquid, that have just a hint of haze. Sweet aromas, with an earthy, estery backdrop. Has some hints of being a red, but really just seems to be a bit unclean. Thicker, lightly oily feel. Caramel, fruit and alcohol flavors. I think the alcohol dominates the spice that might be found from the rye. A bit too much out of balance for me. 8/10
