This classic American amber ale is brewed with caramel malts to balance the hops with the malt sweetness and to add rich color. Regardless of the beer changing names in different regions, this beer is a nationwide favorite.

About 4 oz. served into a tasting glass. From notes. A: Pours a cola color with a thin khaki film. This is a red ale? S: I note some toasted caramel and a touch of citrusy hops. It suffers from the same problem the others beers in the flight did, the aroma was dreadfully weak. What was here was acceptable, though. T: Actually, this one seemed pretty roasty in its flavor. The roasted, toasted, burnt-to-a-crisp malts are followed up by touches of fruit esters and a very mild hop finish. Not bad. M: It’s thin, easy to drink, and with a dry finish. It feels a bit insubstantial, though (it’s not a light lager, so it can’t get away with it) O: A drinkable brew without flaws. Though it’s pretty bland regardless. I at least liked it enough to where I’d get it again on a future trip.

4 oz pour on draft at Hops in Alexandria, VA. Listed as Thoroughbred Red. Clear amber with off-white head. Aromas of malt, light caramel. Tastes of toast, biscuit, malt. Medium-light body with a dry finish.

Very generically malty and sweet, watery caramel - but not really hateful in any way. Just something you’d expect from a kit.

Tap. Pours clear Amber, small off white head, hints of lacing. Very light caramel aroma. Flavor is quite sweet, caramel, wort, grassy hops provide light bitterness. Medium body. Not getting the astringency noted below, but this is still not a good beer.

This McBeer flight just keeps getting worse. This amber is positively offensive. Very acrid, lots of astringency. Pours amber without much h head or lacing. Terrible. Tap at Alexandria brewpub.

Flight 9/1/03 (FLL)-Pours a clear red amber with a small head. Aroma of malt, caramel, and slight toffee. Taste of the same. This medium bodied brew was not bad but not good.

Draft. Ted. Almost headless. Aromaless. Flavorless. Why sell this? Who would drink it?

Nice clear red, with off-white head. Sweet malt nose and taste. Caramel. Some herbal/grassy hops, but light. A light plum ester. Ok beer.

Reddish orange with a sandy head. Nose has caramel notes and a definitive malt sweetness. Dextrinous with a light citrusy quality. I actually really enjoyed this one. Medium body with a light bitterness.

Served on draft at the brewpub. Finally a beer with SOMETHING happening. Pours a clear dark red color with a medium sized offwhite head. Poor head retention. Extremely faint tart malt aroma. The taste is caramel malts, herbal hops and a bitter finish. Thin bodied.
