Pint at brewpub. Pours darn black. It’s basically the same shade as their stout. Delightfully hoppy aroma on this one. Plenty of grapefruit and dank herbs make this smell super nice. Hops transfer well to the flavor. Grapefruit flavors clash well with chocolaty malts. Great American style ale. leems (406) - Portland, Oregon, USA - AUG 26, 2010
Tap. Black, roast and citrus aroma. Pretty big hop flavor then nice roast going on. Yum BIPA! TheRealMGD (555) - Lakewood, Washington, USA - JAN 27, 2011
Tap @ Noble Fir. Dark ruby brown clear pour with a short white head leaving a coarse lace. Nose predicts the body: fresh citrus and pine hops and dark-roasted malt. Medium, moderately carbonated body has flavors of pine, burnt caramel, slight baker’s chocolate and a nice cane sugar sweetness emerges as the ale warms. Secession finishes with a slight citrus tartness and a long coffee and pine bitterness. A solid black IPA from an exceptional organic craft brewer. skoisirius (1908) - Earth, Washington, USA - MAY 22, 2011
Solid solid CDA right here. I love this style. Nice and roasty up front, backed with mild dark fruit flavors and sweeter malts. Mild hints of chocolate. And then of course, hopped up near the back! All the flavors blend perfectly. This is something I’d love to see in 6er’s... keenanrobbins (19) - - JAN 27, 2012
Interesting blend of dark strength and hoppy pep, with the most extreme components of each kind of mellowed by the other’s presence. An interesting brew.

1 oz sample at Beer Revolution, courtesy of @bresnev. Pours a sinful black, with a bubbly tan head. Aroma is a violent clash between toasted malt, and citrus, grainy hops. Taste is extremely hoppy, tempered with a pleasant coffee, chocolate, burnt sugar sweetness that disguises the higher abv quite well. Whatever this is seceding from, it’s succeding.. pdx77 (1483) - Oregon, USA - MAR 9, 2014
On draught at Hopworks. Deep black with light tan head. Aroma is citrus, dark malt, and roasted smokiness. Taste is dark chocolate, citrus, roasted dark malt. Really well balanced; not too bitter not too sweet. Finishes with a hoppy, toasted character. stantheman (1101) - British Columbia, CANADA - MAY 18, 2014
On tap at Alibi Room in Vancouver. Wow! It’s like a hoppy stout is the best I can describe. Big bitter hops with big roasted malts. Medium lingering bitter malted aftertaste. Nice! glkaiser (1214) - Seattle, Washington, USA - MAY 7, 2010
Pours very dark brown with billowing head. Lots of perfumey floral hops balanced with roasted dark malt. Moderate bitterness lingers in the finish. Very perfumey. Well done.
