UPDATED: SEP 15, 2017 Reddish brown to black , hazy, off-white head; aroma is sweet and malty, grainy, slightly yeasty; taste is very sweet, the alcohol shines through, dried fruits, lingering sweet finish; texture is thick and sticky with average carbonation; too sweet, lacks balance

From a 500ml bottle on 26/8/2017. Pours a clear dark brown/amber with a small to medium head. The aroma is sweet and malty, with caramel, toffee and a touch of smoked meat. Taste wise, it’s similarly sweet and malty - more caramel and toffee, lots of brown sugar and treacle, along with a hint of smoky meat. There is the mildest bitterness at the back, which suits the overall experience nicely. The palate is slick and the carbonation moderate. I have a bit of a sweet tooth and enjoyed this one very much.

Bottle, 11C. Clear copper with a pale beige head that fades. Aroma is malty with some sticky bread crusts, hazelnuts, herbal notes. Sweet and rather heavy with lowish carbonation. Lots of caramelised malty notes but not a lot of character. Nice herbal-tinged bitterness is still not quite enough to lighten the load, so it’s neither quite drinkable enough nor deep enough. Still, it’s decent.

ALLOVATE (3055) - Perth, AUSTRALIA - AUG 23, 2017
Into a deep snifter at cellar temperature. Ruby hued brown body with good clarity. Oily legs lead to a short-lived off-white head. Rich, spiced madeira nose softened by notes of loam, compost and earth, nutty praline, rust, leather and overcooked banoffee pie. Quite rich with melanoidins creating a complex mix of flavours drowned by tannic rust/blood flavours. Nutty and woody; chewy with earthy umami notes like stewed beef or Swiss brown mushroom (the second beer of this brewer to have this!!). Alcohol is evident but not enough to balance the earthy malts. Body is light for a double bock. End is long but just a continuation of the palate. Overall it is dry despite the richness of melanoidins. Unique, but a little too askew of my preferred interpretation of Doppelbock. A rough and interesting beer. (50cL swing top, BB 20/03/18, The Liquor Shed, Jandakot)
