06/03 0.5 l fliptop bottle at Aufsturz, Berlin. It poured clear orange brownish body with medium sized head. Weaker caramel malt aroma, note of hops as well. Bitterish, quite simple flavor, honey, light caramel, biscuit malt and herbal hops make it up. Reminds a little bit to English style bitters just with much more body, though this one is not full either. Herbal bitterish finish. Real refreshment after all these overly sweet dunkels those days.

UPDATED: MAR 27, 2010 9th (and probably last) beer on German tour... Light-brown to copper beer with thin light tan head holds up quite well. Nice malt nose is slapped by typical european skunk. Skunky flavor overwhelms light chocolate malts and nice smooth beer. Expect way more from an alt; if this is what it is... used to be a bitter, and now has "Feinherbes Rotgold"?!?! which apparently makes it taste rotten. All the hub-bub about German beers has proven (through random sample of available brews) disappointing at best. Everyone speaks to the quality of the beers but, other than the dunkels or weizen, they are nothing to write home about (except in the form of ratebeer posts). As ratebeer ratings show, the highest rated German beer only comes in at #77, and I was not lucky enough to have that one. Some also say beer is rather cheap in Germany, to which "you get what you pay for" may apply.

Bottle at Aufsturz. Poured a brown-bronze colour with a medium-small lasting thick white head that went away. Light sweetish malty nose. Honeyish sweet taste, not too bitter and somewhat yeasty. There is some bitterness, however, herbal and near the end. Mild but ok enough.

Aroma is slightly musty, with a bit of mineral odor as well. Brownish-golden color. Hint of chocolate. Slightly sticky mouthfeel.

@ a pub in Dortmund. Pop-top bottled as pictured, glass included. Copper/brown pour though still very translucent. Medium/Small head. Nose is grain, slight hops, and sweet malts and corn. Taste is very "lager" feeling with some roasted malts and a small amount of hops. Body is light/medium. Not bad session brew but nothing remarkable either.

(Bottle) Poured copper coloured and almost clear with medium sized and white head. Aroma contained hops, malts and grass. Palate was medium bodied and dry with medium carbonation. Flavours were malts, grass, bitterness and some caramell. Aftertaste was mildly sweet and bitter.

Amber to red coloured, dense, normal, slightly diminishing head. Aroma is dominatingly grain and wheat, also hops, maybe some malt and caramel. tastes light, not full bodied at all, a bit disappointing. Slightly bitter, smooth. I thought better of this one, it’s a bit watery.

Is this actually a dunkelweizen? I have my doubts. Copper pour with a off-white head. Tastes a lot like an english bitter, but with the hops tending slightly more towards the herbal character of german pils. Toffee, fruit yogurt , and a decently bitter finish. Medium, slightly creamy mouthfeel. Very tasty, and pretty unique.
