Bierdimpfe (624) - Quebec, CANADA - APR 18, 2017
Deep opaque black color with no visible activity. Creamy brown/pinkish 2 finger head, lasting around 5-10 minutes, with okay legs, and not much swirl reconstruction. Flavors of walnuts, dark roasted grains, plums, molasses, prunes, raisins, chocolate, coffee, herbal spices. Heavily sweet with a coarse bitter dark feel. Smooth and oily medium to full body with a light crisp. Strong finish, thick malty roasted feel, some mocha, soft oak, dense ester fruits. Close to a barley wine. Nice intensity, not too excessive. Quite bitter but not overly spicy. Although the smell is way too faint. A little dry and vinous, very rich and highly warming. Decent appetizer. Highly acidic and yeasty, as it warms you get a slight putrid puke like feel that I cant enjoy. Still the flavors are pretty solid and tasty, while the body is pleasant. Overall good quality craft.

Its time for this experiment to finally end - Just opened the 1L bottle I bought in 2011. Heard it was a disaster and I really didnt want to drink the whole thing solo. Well, tonights different. And maybe this has waaaaaaay over sat. Hopefully the 5yrs in total darkness and cool temps will be kind. Zero Fridge cooling. The aroma is quite good but minus the licorice that faded at some point. Comparing this to when it was fresh isnt fair as that shit was in beast mode. Chocolate, mocha, mild black licorice on the sweeter side, toasted malts. I have a thing for big stouts that are slightly oxidized and thats what we got here. Licorice is minimal, short initial burn which returns a bit on the finish and nose buds, slight candy sweetness, more bitterness as it sits - and that bitterness lingers, toasty. Well not much to say about the taste. Aroma was enjoyable. Think I put fresh up as 3.6. My eyes

Thin medium brown head of varying sized bubbles. It looks as if the cap was not super secure on this brew. Came off very easy and the brew looks to be a little bit flat. Lots of black licorice in the aroma with some molasses, dark roasted malts, lactose and a bit of root beer. Color is basically black. Flavor is creamy and very smooth. Soft buttery malts up front then changes into the licorice in the middle and finishes strong roastyness. Moderate alcohol presence and warming. Lingering sweetness and licorice as you drift off. A pretty tasty and decent brew. Different but i like licorice so all good with me.

Bottle. Pours a black color with a small tan head. Has a roasted malty licorice aroma. Roasted malty licorice and chocolate flavor. Has a roasted malty licorice and chocolate finish.

Bottle. Man this is a thick beer. Black as used motor oil. Two finger head that quickly disappears and hardly any bubbles after. Taste and aroma are very strongly licorice. I love licorice but after the first glass its a little over the top. Nice beer though.

Appearance: clear deep brown, one fat finger of fluffy beige head, excellent retention and minimal lacing. (4/5) Aroma: liquorice, roasty malt, coffee and chocolate, burnt sugar. (7/10) Taste: moderate-high sweet, high bitter. (7/10) Full slightly oily body, moderate-soft carbonation, drying and warming lingering bitter finish. (3/5) Surprisingly well behaved for a massive behemoth, like an 800 pound gorilla who could rip your arms off and beat you to death with them, but instead wears a top hat and monocle, and argues philosophy with you. He still gets his way, mind you, because youre terrified of him. Well, this beer has its way with you, eventually. How could it not? In one bottle, youve got the same alcohol content as a six pack of normal beer. But then, why be normal, right? And I love black liquorice, so this is definitely my cup of tea. The liquorice does come through loud and clear, and yes, dominates, but again in that understated fashion that allows the roasted malt coffee and chocolate tones to be present without being completely swamped by the liquorice. High sweetness is impressively balanced by the high bitterness so that it never becomes cloying. (14/20)

Cybercat (5553) - Georgia, USA - AUG 20, 2016
Pours opaque sable with a thick tan head. Licorice dominates the aroma but gladly shares the stage with toasted malt and a hint of mocha. Flavor features plenty of licorice, as well as roast malt, coffee, molasses and chocolate undertones. A bit sweet, but good. Mouthfeel offers decent fizz and body. Get destroyed - and please, please call a cab, or Lyft, or Uber.

chinchill (4746) - South Carolina, USA - JAN 3, 2016
Large shared bottle with a flip top ceramic top. Pours thick and dark with a good head. Aroma -back licorice and fainter black bread Flavor - dominated by black licorice but with the stout showing as well. The licorice prominent but is not as strong as in, say, black jelly beans. Lightly sweet at an appropriate level. Overall: easily recomended for fans of licorice and stouts.
