Huvila Arctic Circle Ale is a chestnut coloured ale with a malty/fruity odour. It tastes of dark fruits and caramel malts and finishes off with a nice bitter hop tail. It is brewed with both juniper twigs and a large dose of Finnish attitude. It is available on tap an in bottles in bars and restaurants across Finland. The beer has also featured among the seasonal Christmas beers at Alko, the Finnish monopoly retail distributor of beers with more than 4.7% Alc. Arctic Circle Ale is also imported into the US through Shelton Brothers.

Pours a one finger white head that vanishes quickly to a trace leaving no lace. Deep brown color. Light-medium carbonation and medium-heavy bodied. Sweet juniper nose and flavor has malty sweetness with light, dry juniper finish. $9.00 for a 500ml bottle from Tully’s Beer & Wine Wells, Me.

500 mL bottle. I’m a big fan of this sort of traditional ale. Chestnut brown with a nice head. You get the berries in the nose and in the flavour, where the malt balances nicely. Not too sweet, though. If you like Traquair House Ale, you’ll like this.

Bottle from Alko, Kouvoula. Thin brown head. Dark-red-amber color. The aroma is fruity with black currants and violets and a litle rancid. The taste is smooth malty with some burnt caramell.

Wow. First domestic rater of this. Dark brown with a red tint to it. Faint brown head. Not much on the aroma, just mild malt and faint juniper. Next to nothing in fact, which disturbs me given the other ratings. The body was a bit better with a strong malt backbone and a very junipery taste. A solid carob malt flavor.

Rating #10 for this beer.

Wow, this one kicks ass. What a pleasant surprise! Deep brown pour, hazy, nice light-tan head. Sweet, molasses-brown-bread with agar aroma. Sweet flavor, brown sugar / molasses and raisin, but under it a nice juniper spiciness and resin that I find both a surprising complement to a sweet dark ale and a very successful complement. Great mouthfeel, no heat, extremely drinkable. It’s sweet (recalling some of the other dark beers from Scandinavia) but if one takes that in stride it’s a really neat piece of brewing. I’m delighted to have had the chance to try this one.

500 ml bottle from Bevmo. Pours a murky brown color with a small beige head that soon recedes to a fine film. The aroma is strong with sweet malts, rye breads and that which I guess is the juniper twigs. The flavor is sweet malts forward with caramel malts, spices, nutty biter hops and rye. The palate is smooth and the carbonation is soft. Finishes medium in duration with lingering juniper. Overall: A boldly flavored brew--This one really grew on me as i drank it, my hats off to the brewer.

Bottle. 7.3%. Best before 01.05.16. Pours a cloudy/murky reddish amber/brown, with a tan head. Great lacing. Sweet, (dark) fruity aroma. Light spicy note and a roasted hint as it warms. Further warming brings out a hint of... chlorine? Same flavour, sans the chlorine, with a bitterness in the background, the latter coming out in the finish; liquorice. Lingering mild alcohol burn. Soft palate. Overall good. A wee bit cloying in the long run, but otherwise well-balanced. 24.11.15.
