I must have bought this beer years ago, found it in a forgotten corner of my cellar and now it has passed its ’best before’ date by two years... And considering this is Huyghe, I don’t have much trust in it. Anyway: medium, off-white, regularly shaped head over a pale orange blonde beer, clear but completely filled with disgusting chunks of protein and dead yeast all over the place, varying in size from a few millimeters to more than a centimeter. Needless to say, the aroma is seriously oxidized (the sweet, rusty smell we all know and hate); other than that, I get canned peaches, sweet sherry, iron, strawberry yoghurt, sweet cider, honey, rotting apples. Taste is honeyish sweetness, canned fruits, light sourish apple touch, lightly caramelly malts, somewhat metallic as hinted by the iron accent in the aroma, medium carbonated but body clearly thinned out by old age, yeasty finish with lingering sugary sweetness (fortunately not cloying - more a canned fruit kind of sweetness), subtle earthy hop bitterishness and a minerally accent. Thin, metallic, too sweet, strange and - this is where my own forgetfulness comes in - too old. Not too pleasant, but I can imagine it was better when it was young. Yet another boring Huyghe concoction - I will not bother to find a fresh one. After one of the floating chunks hit my lips by accident, I made the painful decision to pour it down the drain - and take one point off for appearance. DJoer (1291) - NETHERLANDS - JUL 24, 2013
