The Barley Wine Style Ale is our most potent ale and is characterized by a rich, malty flavor and is balanced with a heavy hop bitterness. This beer is sweet with a hint of caramel flavor and the high hop bitterness is barely preceivable over the intense malt and alcohol. Barleywines are typically aged for one year before release and will continue to improve for several years. Barley Wine Style Ale is available in bottles.

CapFlu (5132) - Victoria, British Columbia, CANADA - NOV 7, 2007
Sampled at The Stumbling Monk in Seattle on October 18, 2007. Pours a thin, dissipated white head with a red body. Fruity peaches, soap, lemonade and cherries in the aroma. Flavour is good with a strong malt base and passion fruit finish. Very good.

Bottle, brewed 2012.03.15. Listed at 10.1%. Pours a cloudy reddish brown color with a moderate tan head on there. Nose seems pretty hoppy, and seems like it has some stale grass to it, along with a bit of boozy caramel underneath. Taste is little sweet up front, but has a bitter finish more in line with a DIPA. Decent drink, but not great for the style.

Over a year old, this batch had some time to age. Appearance is orange-amber with a creamy beige cover. Rich fruity aroma that splinters into apricot, tangerine, dark candied fruits, and zesty fruit punch. The body is of juicy fruitiness and chocolate. Apricot, tangerine, and fruity punchy notes all emerge. Medium-bodied, even a bit thin over the palate. No off-flavors and quite quaffable.

Aged 12oz bottle purchased at the brewery (thus, assuming appropriate storage). Bottled 3-2012. As soon as the cap hisses I can smell the toffee rich alcoholic strong beer. Aroma is just slightly astringent. A hint of cherry astringency. A soft cardboard. Flavor is similar but has a long dry bitter astringent finish. Pretty decent barley wine for a big (an not much else) brew.

SpringsLicker (3677) - Tennessee, USA - MAY 10, 2010
Sampled at tasting at stevo’s. Clear light coppery amber body. Earthy musty aroma with some caramel. Sour. Bad.

Shag (3045) - Chattanooga, Tennessee, USA - MAY 17, 2010
This sucks dawg................A murky orange color with a white head. All is well looking at it, its when you smell and taste it that the problems arise. The aroma is musty like an old stanky blanket found in an attic that the dog used to sleep on. Also some oranges and sweet potatoes. The flavor is very sour with tons of synthetic lemon juice. It didn’t seem old to me, just poorly crafted. Quite possibly the worst barley wine I’ve ever had.

decaturstevo’s stevofest part 2. Sample from a bottle thanks to decaturstevo. Clear red, whitish ring. Sweet raisiny caramel aroma. Taste is more of the same but off somehow, plastic

Gusler (2652) - Tucson, Arizona, USA - JAN 10, 2002
Pours a deep brown color, with a moderate beige head and fair lace. Nose is malt with slight hints of caramel, the middle is medium, the finish some what semi-sweet, dry, and a nice hop presence. Average as BW's go, not great, but drinkable.

tronraner (2459) - Walland, Tennessee, USA - APR 13, 2010
Sampled at tasting at stevo’s. Pours orange with white head. The aroma is angel food cake, lumber, and alcohol. The flavor is rubbing alcohol, lemon, melon, cand campstove fuel. Ouch.
