COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Midnight Ryder – a hat tip to Bischoff’s son, Elliott Ryder – is cloaked in mystery and full of surprises. A style of disputed origins and merit, American Black Ale puts a distinctly American twist on the India Pale Ale with five varieties of malt that give this dark beer a medium body and a complex array of flavors including caramel, chocolate and a smidgen of roast. Sealing the deal are six varieties of American-grownhops added throughout the 90-minute boil. This beer offers a resinous and piney character with just enough citrus to bring balance at the finish line.

Floral hops, dark, toasted malts, filter coffee. Very hazy, dark brown, small, creamy, beige head. Medium bitter. Dark, toasted malts, coffee, soft carbonation, medium bodied. Very nice Black IPA, well-balanced. Keg at the brewery, Minneapolis.

Black pour with a tan head, lace present. Aroma of chocolate and pine with a hint of roasted malt. Full bodied, almost creamy. Taste is full of chocolate, pine and earth. Nice bitter finish, but isn’t overwhelming. Hint of roast in there too. Nicely balanced.

12 Fl. Oz. Can. Poured dark brown, cola like, minimal beige head but nice spotty lacing all over the glass. Aroma of pine, caramel and some chocolate. Taste is hoppy, slightly bitter, super well balanced with malts, roasty coffee. Very good, very enjoyable.

Can to glass. Nose is deep cocoa, fudge, breadth, piney. Damn. Actually a beer I like to smell. Taste is moderately ok. Fine. You know what. It’s not bad for a style that sucks balls. But that’s like being the ugliest midget. You’re still a midget. Bleh

12 oz can. Dark brown with a creamy tan head. Nose is tangerine, cocoa and pine. Medium to full body with a buzz. Substantial stuff. Taste is cocoa, pine needles, espresso and broiled grapefruit. Searching for a bit of sweetness. Bitter, bitter doesn’t work for me. Better than most.

On tap at the brewery. Very black, brown head. I like that it’s far more ipa than most black ales--still has some roast character, but a lot of hop to it. I bought a growler.

Type: 12-oz. can Glass: Manzanita pint glass From: My cousin Sam Price: N/A Purchased: N/A; Received July 24, 2015 Consumed: Aug. 7, 2015 Misc.: Canned on May 27, 2015 Thanks Sam! Poured a black color with four fingers of frothy, tan head. Very nice among of layered, uneven, foamy lacing on the sides of the glass. Good-to-very good retention on the top. (Sight - 4.13) Smelled dark chocolate, black coffee, toffee, caramel, roasty malts, licorice peppery notes, smokiness and light Citra hops. More hops, but not sure what kinds. (Smell - 4.00) Tasted bitter black coffee, dark chocolate, roasty malts, black licorice, smoky fire, burnt toast, toffee, caramel, Nugget and woody pine. (Taste - 4.00) Full body. Slick-to-chewy texture. Average carbonation. Bitter, roasty finish. (Feel - 3.88) This was a pretty good black ale. It reminded me a lot of the Surly Blakkr which I had recently, but not quite as good. (Overall - 4.00) 4.02 90 A

12 ounce can courtesy of TheHOFF43. Thanks! Dark brown, large foamy tan head, good retention. Aroma of roasted malt, chocolate, mild floral hops. The taste is roasted malts, nuts, dark chocolate, herbal almost piney hops. Medium bodied.
