Midnight Ryder a hat tip to Bischoffs son, Elliott Ryder is cloaked in mystery and full of surprises. A style of disputed origins and merit, American Black Ale puts a distinctly American twist on the India Pale Ale with five varieties of malt that give this dark beer a medium body and a complex array of flavors including caramel, chocolate and a smidgen of roast. Sealing the deal are six varieties of American-grownhops added throughout the 90-minute boil. This beer offers a resinous and piney character with just enough citrus to bring balance at the finish line.

(12oz can) Pours a black body with a small brown head. Aroma of roasted grain, grass, chocolate, and caramel. Flavor of grass, roasted malt, chocolate, and grapefruit with a bitter finish.

Pour on tap at the brewery, dark brownish black pour with thin off white head, aroma brought big orange, lemon, grapefruit into a nice roast, coffee, chocolate middle, some nutty notes as well. Taste is a mix of toffee, caramel, into some orange, pine and grass, slight roast, coffee in there some cocoa powder, finishing bitter, dry. Tasty!

Pours basically black with a good head & good lacing on the glass.

The aroma is rich and roasty with a nice chocolaty character, and loads of mocha and coffee... such a nice malt character that the fruity hops sort of play second fiddle.

The flavor has a nice roastiness, a pleasant but low level of bitterness. & some dark chocolate. The beer keeps it plenty on the dry side and the hop character is nice, fruit forward... and again sort of pales in comparison to the nice roasty/stouty sorts of things going on here.

Not a great example of black IPA, but a really cool hoppy stout for real. .

Poured from the can at Icehouse. Beautiful dark pour with a thick had. Aroma is roasted chocolate and coffee... Almost too roasted, tastes a bit burnt. Long bitter aftertaste. Good overall but could have used a bit more sweetness to balance the bitter roasted taste.

Can shared at CBC Islington during the Ryan Tasting - many thanks to Ryan the Can Man. Pours brown with a big, frothy beige head. Good baking cocoa in here, rich pine, some toasty bread. A solid black IPA on the whole. Very drinkable, pretty dynamic.

12oz can, Steasy66 tasting at CBC Islington. Thanks Ryan. The aroma is moderate-heavy roast, lighter coffee, chocolate, and faint pine. It pours a dark brown colour with a small beige head. Taste is dark chocolate, coffee, burnt notes, roast, and pine. Its medium bodied with good carbonation. Overall, another good one from Ryan.

Bottle 75 cl. Pours black with a vague tint of orange and a creamy, beige head leaving a neat lacework. Roasty nose with a hint of herbal hops. Rich, sweet chocolatey body with an ashy edge and a dry bitterness - deriving from malts rather hops. More so a hoppy Stout in my book - but a pleasant beer alright. 151013

Bottle cheers to Ryan. Looks spectacular in the glass. This one has a very appealing hop profile - pine, grapefruit, citric juice, orange & lemon rind. A fair bit of roast in the taste with light milk chocolate behind it all. Bitterness is a little too astringent. Solid stuff

Had it out of a can, poured a dark brown hue with a mild malt coffee aroma. The taste is a perfect marriage between a hoppy IPA and some coffee mall!
