Pours an opaque black with small head and moderate lacing. Aroma of coffee, dark chocolate, roasted malt up front with some subtle grapefruit hop in the background. Moderately bitter throughout. Medium to full bodied, soft carbonation. Long, full bitter finish. this is well crafted. I like this a lot. It starts off almost as if it’s going to be more like a porter, but the hops catch you to remind you what you’re really drinking. Bravo to this. On tap. Nice brown pour. Aroma is citrus and pine resin. Flavor is aspirin bitter and nothin else. I love good hoppy beers, but this is way out of balance. Not good. hopscotch (11101) - Vero Beach, Florida, USA - JUN 27, 2013
Can... Pours black with a mid-sized, pillowy, taupe head. Excellent retention. The bouquet is an intermingling of burnt grains, dark chocolate, caramel and pine. Light to medium-bodied with dancing carbonation. The flavor is roasty, burnt and bitter. The finish is crisp, coarse, bitter, and then Sahara-dry. Draft. Medium tan head that leaves nice lacing atop black body. Aroma is moderately sweet, coffee, some orange, grapefruit. Taste is moderately sweet, grapefruit, coffee, light roast, orange. Medium body, light acidity, low carbonation. kmweaver (3207) - Petaluma, California, USA - JUN 16, 2013
12oz can, courtesy of MatSciGuy. Thanks, Levi! Really dug this one. Pours a deep chocolate-brown, with a pillowy tan head that lasts; great lacing. Bitter chocolate, a hint of caramel, and some nice citrusy/piney hop character in the nose; focused and engaging. Medium mouthfeel with medium-high CO2; a nice spritzy carbonation and citrusy hop liveliness at the front of the tongue; a sturdy grapefruit and piney bitterness at the core; around those core points of contact are those darker notes: bitter chocolate, milk chocolate, hints of an oily, toasty nuttiness (likely taking some of that oily feel from the hop resins); a really nice black IPA, one of the best I’ve had.

12oz can from some kind individual. Opaque brown-black body with a big, foamy, beige head. Oliy black malt and a steady citrus backbone. OK, not my favorite example of the style, a little sticky and sugary. Rich and full bodied, certainly not thin or lacking ingredients. Doesn’t quite come together. On tap at Bulldog Northeast. Dark and hoppy up front. Lots of pine and herbal spice layered with smoky chocolate. Decent enough, but I am still not a big fan of this style. jmgreenuk (9452) - Kuala Lumpur, MALAYSIA - JUN 6, 2013
Can courtesy of Kermis. Poured a deep mahogany with a broken white tan head. The aroma is grassy hop, leading to a smooth, weak liqourice bitter smoky flavour. A superb and rather unusual beer. sawbuck (732) - Round Lake, Illinois, USA - JUN 5, 2013
Aromas of caramel, chocolate, coffee, with faint hops in the background. Beautiful pour, pitch black with dark tan head, very frothy. Smokey, roasted malt in front, followed by bitter chocholate, hint of vanilla. Finishes dry and bitter, but not hoppy bitter, more like dark chocolate. Decent but more like a porter. kermis (13480) - The Hague / Amsterdam, NETHERLANDS - JUN 5, 2013
Can shared. Pours almost black with tan head. Aroma of big roasted malt, grassy hops, light citrus, resin and light chocolate. Flavour is over moderate sweet and bitter. Medium bodied with light carbonation.
