[6180-20140215] Tap. Rich soya plant fronds and woody roast malt aroma. Black brown body with a medium-lasting creamy mocha head. Roasty soya wood malt flavour is rich and heavy. Full body. Very good. (7/5/8/4/16) 4.0

(On tap at the brewpub, March 8 2014) Pours basically black with a small, tight tan head with a little lace. Aroma has big sour dark fruit, a reasonable amount of toasty wood, some bourbon and a slight sweet chocolate malt note. Flavour has lots of sour/tart dark fruit and a little roast malt up front with a bit of red wine character, a sweeter dark coffee/chocolate malt stout character makes its presence felt in the middle while the bourbon and wood builds into the finish, which is pleasantly dry and toasty with a lingering sour/tart fruitiness. Medium bodied with soft carb, silky smooth. Love the integration of the character of a sour with the bourbon wood notes and the underlying stout body is just powerful enough to be felt without overwhelming those items. Could sip this for ages, until the 11% puts one to sleep. Super.

Pours dark with thick head that leaves minor lacing. Smells of oak berries, bourbon and molasses. Tastes of toasty malts, oak, the bourbon steps in, booze and a little wine. Medium-high carbonation. A good beer. I think Nicklebrook did a better job with this type of beer with their Kentucky Bastard.

UPDATED: APR 7, 2016 2014-02-15. Black body with a lovely creamy tan head. 5+ Aroma is lovely, sweetish bourbon and mild vanilla accented by a lightly tangy fruit character, pleasantly so. Flavour is similar, dark malt core, moderate bourbon throughout has a really interesting interplay with the sourness. 8+ Very smooth medium bodied palate, soft carbonation. Fantastic! 8/5/8/4/16 On tap at the brewpub, Toronto

2016-03-28. Quick notes - Slightly more sour than last time I am still super impressed by the overall balance and interaction. +1-2 overall Lovely. On tap at Indie Alehouse, Toronto.

[Draught at the brewpub] Pours a very dark brown, almost black, with a small long-lasting creamy beige head and leone lacing on the glass. Aroma has lots of bourbon and wood along with sour fruit and hints of chocolate and coffee. Flavour: Wow, that’s interesting, bourbon and wood yes but also some fruity tartness and some roastiness in the finish. Medium bodied, slightly creamy mouthfeel. A big beer, awesome in small samples.
