COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
First brewed in 1968, Thomas Hardy’s Ale is a barley wine that improve its taste and aroma over the years, maturing in flavour like fine red wines.

In 2015 a small quantity of Thomas Hardy’s Ale was left to rest for more than six months in oak barrels, just like the first vintage: this is our Thomas Hardy The Historical Ale.

The result of barrel ageing is an even more multifaceted and complex Barley Wine with sweet, sour and spicy aromas of Hine Cognac.

Hine decided to move from Dorset to France to learn the art of distillation. This was the beginning of a long adventure that led Hine Cognac to becoming one of the most prestigious cognacs in the world.

A coincidence we have chosen to celebrate with this special edition beer.

Mycket gott!

UPDATED: DEC 6, 2017 25cl Bottle No. 01095 bb05/2026, at 1. Adventstasting 2017 (blind) merci BA-Beersnake1 . - Blind surprise, easily identifiable as barley wine, although I'd have called it a clean US/UK rendition on account of the sleek malts, condensed sugars and "fresh" hop bitter layers. Well made, organically tight with the cognac booze well hidden in fruity notes of apple brandy, grape, rock candy and slightly overpowered by still fresh vanilla. In ways less boozy&fuming than many a Belgian tripel, a postprandial treat of a blond fruitcake beer. Not bad for a small Italian conglomerate contracting at meantime. Now to sample the original in a modern and older vintage

250 ml bottle from Boxbeers, vintage 2016, No. 09131, bb 29/09/26. Thanks to Werckmeister!
Dark red-brown body, with a tiny, dissipating, beige head.
Aroma of toffee, cocoa, dried fruits, cognac, some fruit tea, some vanilla, some wood.
Tastes similar, but richer, with more chocolate and cognac, subte booze.
Medium, a bit oily mouthfeel, with a moderate carbonation.
Finishes warm, a bit astringent, a bit dry, wooden, medium sweet, with lots of cognac, chocolate, fruits.

Tasty. Rich and big, with the cognac barrel very well integrated, leading to a warm, sweet sipper. Lovely chocolate and fruits throughout. Quite on par with the O'Hanlon's version I've had some months ago.

August 2017 - Bottle share at One Canada Square. Huge thanks Ken! As 'Thomas Hardy The Historical Ale ', 12.7%. Lovely looking bottle, #09113, 2016 vintage aged in Hine cognac. Pours brown with the slightest red hue, no real head forming. Aroma is big toffee and caramel, sugary, a little oxidised. Quite similar to Thomas Hardy's Ale but with some cognac notes that complement the base pretty closely. Body is smooth with soft carbonation. Taste is sugary toffee, a little oxidised, some cognac and booze cutting through the sweetness. Pretty robust with an up-front booziness. Very nice. (7-4-8-4-16=3.9)

Bottle bought @ Systembolaget. Sampled several times & this has improved even further since this initial rating. Deep golden pour with a very small tan head. Beautiful nose with plenty of caramel/toffee malts, dried dark fruits, hay, leather, moist wood, minerals, vanilla & cognac. Sweet, tiny bitter, malty & slightly fruity taste. Soft, round, tiny oily & mellow mouthfeel. Awesome nose & very solid taste if perhaps a hint to sweet. Very vinous mouthfeel with low carb. Love it!

Botltle. Grinding & Winding tasting, 2017. Light brown amber with white head. Aroma of toasted malt, caramel, dried fruits, vanila and notes of wood, Cognac. Heavy sweet and some alcoholic warmth. Medium and sticky. A nice one...
