I love malty Scotch ales. This one is malty, but also has a bit of a hop bite which, to me, is not a good characteristic for a Scotch ale. There are enough hop monsters out there; while this is no hop monster, I was hoping for a malt monster ala’ Macandrews or Traquair House. This is still a mighty fine ale though, probably the best balance of malt and hops that I have tasted if you want to look at it that way. The ABV is pleasantly warming, as you would want from a Scotch ale on a cold winter’s night by the fireplace.
Bottle. Was expecting something like a McEwans Champion, but this is much more sophisticated. Yes, there's a boozy background, but it's more than balanced by a nice smoothness. Pretty good.

Not much head. Color is a bit dirty, clear, orange-brown. Aroma is sweet and malty and has caramel, bourbon vanilla, salt licorice, red wine and wine- or (red) berry-based liquour aromas. Some of the alcohol can also be sensed as warmth. Palate is slightly watery, but it can be interpreted as lightness. There’s also a bit of heaviness to the palate. A lightly dry finish. Taste is malty, typical ale tastes, caramel, aniseed, salt licorice, some faint burnt notes. A very stylish and delicious presentation of the ale style. There are no extra sidetastes. A bit watery, but nevertheless quite good beer. ozzatoadisback (176) - ITALY - MAR 5, 2017
Dark copper, still slightly transparent. Dense slightly off-white head, good persistence and nice lacing. Aroma shows earthy malt sweetness, notes of chocolate and a bit of spiciness. Not incredibly intense but very nice and clean. Taste is mainly malty sweet with caramel, toffee and slight earthiness. Slightest spiciness and maybe some fruity hints. Bitterness is low, and pretty much just bringing balance. Medium bodied with average carbonation, slightly creamy. Nice scotch ale Villyzzz (392) - Espoo, FINLAND - SEP 30, 2016

Clear, deep dark brown colour with a foamy tan head. Sweet malty aroma, a lot of cherries. Slightly bitter taste with some sweet malts. Rich bodied, slick mouthfeel with medium carbonation. Decent effort but not very memorable. jampura (195) - FINLAND - MAY 11, 2016
UPDATED: MAY 11, 2016 Ihan ok täyteläisempi olut. Makea, jopa hieman siirappinen, jättää hieman limasen kielen. Hiivaisuus vaivaa. adamnase (744) - Kronoby, FINLAND - APR 25, 2016
Bottled. Pours dark rusty copper color, hazy with a mediumsized head fading with some lacing. Aroma of caramel, dark fruit, dates and spice. Medium sweetness, light bitterness, slight dryness to finish. Medium body, slick texture. StevieT (2015) - AUSTRALIA - MAR 18, 2016
