Looks like liquid caramel. Opaque and rich, with a frothy white head. Aroma is pretty damn hoppy, with a lot of malt. A generally big smell all around, with hints of estery fruit, some caramel, and plenty of herbal hoppiness. Flavor is rich and powerful, with a big hop bite, coming through more citric in the taste. Still some herbal qualities, but lending mostly a grapefruity flavor with a very sharp bitter finish, mingling with a strong alcohol presence. I'm not detecting much in the way of breadiness, like most of the raters here. Malts are rich and well done, balancing the hops well. Estery apple and pear, with a bit of caramel, big bodied, although perhaps a little thinner than what most american breweries are doing to barleywines these days. I personally think it's well done, subtle and understated, leaning perhaps less towards american extravagance.
From old tasting notes. Hazy caramel brown color with a brief white head. Sweet malt aroma hints a caramel apples. Chewy sweet caramel malt flavor has a mellow warming approach. Couleur thé glacé, d’apparence extrêmement brouillée, rempli de tout petits dépôts flottant partout dans le verre. Absence totale de mousse. Meringue, citrons confits, carton humide et beurre semble perturbé d’être revisités après de longues années de sommeil. Plutôt mince en bouche, finale astringente et acre. Totally opaque murky weird yellowish brown, no head at all. Obviously bottle-conditioned. Citric (pineapple, lemon) and floral aroma, buttery caramel bread and mostly lemon cake components. No surprises at all on the tongue, it tastes exactly what it smells, lemon cake and pumpkin seeds. Sour doughy yeast lends oxidation notes in the finish. Thin body is completely still and lifeless. Uninteresting first Ipswich experience I fear though this bottle had obviously suffered from its 9 years.

Caramel, chocolate, lemon-citrus and pears in a muddled and jumbled aroma. Murky, muddy tan appearance almost like iced tea with milk. Very strong earthy, organic, vegetal and sugary flavour with plenty of apparent alcohol and an overwhelming taste of cardboard. Strong alcohol warming. Flat and heavy in the mouth. Very sweet toffee/caramel malts and citrusy hops swarm the nostrils, remnants of a past wealth and liveliness. The flat and marshy appearance though betrays them and predict a barley wine past its prime.
Yeasty bitterness and sweet fruitiness attempt to create interest, but the body is too flat for them to hang on to something. Caramel malts are there of course, but seem disconcerted at the way things have gone downhill.
A bodybuilder which hasn’t trained at all for years is an intriguing example of flab.
Caramel sweetness in the nose with vonous hints and honey notes. Mild smokiness. Mildly transparent ruby reddish color with a small to no head. There is lots of yeast sediment stuck to the bottom of the bottle. Start is mildly sweet and mildly vinous with some roastiness in the middle. Caramel maltiness in the finish with a small hop kick. Didn’t think much of this one. Lots of caramel, no head and little carbonation and even after months not moving around in my cellar still poured a bit murky. I think that this one might have been enjoyed a bit more when younger. The winey-ness kind of overpowered me (not hard) and let me to say that this is not terribly balanced.
