For those of you who don’t know, this beer has a story behind it. I’m a bike nut and I’ve always wanted to name a beer after the Cannibal, partly because I think it’s a cool name for a beer and partly because he’s one of my heroes. The Cannibal by the way is Eddy Merckx, a Belgian who raced in the 60s and 70s and whom many consider the greatest cyclist in history. He’s kind of the the Pele or Babe Ruth of cycling. He was called the Cannibal because he was said to devour his opponents. Basically if you were in a race and Eddy Merckx showed up you were now racing for second place. So we made this strong Belgian beer in tribute to a strong Belgian rider. We also brewed it in celebration of the Tour De France and the bike club Iron Hill founded. This beer always goes on tap on the first day of the Tour and stays on tap through the Champs de L’elysee. We also save a keg that we break out every year at our thank you party for the organizers of the Iron Hill Twilight Criterium. So this beer is pretty steeped in cycling culture.

Hazy gold w/ lacy white head; aroma remiscient of Duvel, but lighter; flavor also reminiscent of Duvel, but a bit lighter; finishes lOng and soft, but light. I would humbly call this Duvel Light. Great but light!

On tap at GABF. Pours a clear gold with frothy white head. The aroma is citrus and floral. Medium body, strong yeast, bubblegum, spice, light finish, good.

Can from the Iron Hill in Maple Shade. Mostly clear yellow color, slightly green hue, thin fizzy head. A ton of Belgian yeast / banana. Good amount of spice. Something feels a bit artificial. A little too sweet. A little too boozy. Not a bad beer, but not my favorite example of the style.

BiddleBrau (1238) - Fort Washington, Pennsylvania, USA - MAY 20, 2017
Tap at IHNW. Seems golden but little head. Spicy aroma, some mustiness. Dry and earthy, Belgian yeast character. Missing some crispness.

ElCapitan22 (363) - Pennsylvania, USA - JAN 27, 2017
Pours a hazy gold color. Has a really nice creamy head that hold very well during consumption. Has a Belgian aroma and drinks like it too. Has a taste like banana and wheat. This is just ok, although it’s not my style.

Golden orange pour with sweet aroma of bread fruit, and yeast. Apple and citrus sweetness with some bread and yeast background. Good beer.

Draft at Lancaster. location.Light, clear gold color. Aroma is moderate esters with light banana, some mineral, spritzy. There is not much to the beer, the flavor is light water with moderate banana and a mineral finish. Not particularly a good stab at a difficult style for American brewers.

gnoff (10986) - Göteborg, SWEDEN - JUN 29, 2016
Draught at Alla Spinna, Philly, on April 30, 2016.
Listed at 7.4% ABV.
Hazy golden color, small white head. Belgian yeast, light bitter taste. Medium to fizzy mouthfeel, low to medium low bitterness. Yeast, phenolic aftertaste. Some smoke, phenolic, Blegian yeast scent.

On tap at Maple Shade. This is one of Iron Hill’s better beers, and they know it, because it’s on tap all the time. It’s a Belgian dubbel with all the trappings. Nothing to write home about, but worth ordering if you’re at IH. Nice pillowy bright white head, everlasting like too much car wash soap, and sticky estery sweet flavor.

Oakes (18883) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - MAY 13, 2016
Hazy light tan-amber. Not much head. Aroma has light apple, and vague pale malt...smells lighter than it is. Has a plasticy character, light esters, fair bit of alcohol in the finish.

ffaoe (923) - Moorestown, New Jersey, USA - JAN 25, 2016
light malt aroma. golden and clear with huge foamy white head. Slightly malty upfront then light hop bitterness, finished with sweet and spice flavors, smooth finish. medium body and moderate carbonation
