Pours dark brown with a medium tan head...nice lacing and retention. Aroma has nice roastiness beneath spicy/piney hops. Flavor has some cocoa and caramel...nice roasty/burnt notes accentuating piney/spicy hops. Mouthfeel is medium and the finish is slightly sweet before turning burnt/dry. On draft at the Lancaster location, pour was light brown, off white colored head, good lacing all the way down. The aroma was oranges, citrus, pine. The flavor followed, hops featured like they should be, oranges, citrus hops, pine hops, some caramel, wet spongey (not sure I like this descriptor, but whatever - I really liked it), faint roast to accent and not dominate this black ipa. On tap, Lancaster. Chestnut brown pour. Very citrusy, with lots of grapefruit with some orange. The roast is subtle and not bad. I don’t usually dog this kind of take on the style, but this was alright. MrChopin (4305) - Baltimore, Maryland, USA - MAY 30, 2011
dark brown, thin cream ring with bit of oil slick on tap. Nose at first of cinnamon and banana bread, bit of chocolate, bark. Bit dead nose, with warmth some earth and roast emerge. Flavor is heavy chocolate, light grapefruit and pine, roast emerging with warmth, chocolate cake on the finish with a hint of orange. Oily thick body, decent finish.
