From notes. First reviewed 7/6/2011. Poured into a tulip.
Iron Hill Oak Aged Cherry Quadrupel pours a dark cranberry brown color with caramel edges. No real head to speak of.
The aroma is mostly sour cherry, with a fair amount of booze - which is actually a little tough to get past, some nice barnyard funk, but not much malt aroma.
In the flavor, there is just a touch of quad sweetness to start. Some cinamon, sour cherry, a little bit of oak, and a dose of funk. Either the quad fell out of this one or the combination doesn’t really blow me away.
This was fairly flat, and the excessively light carbonation created a weird taste/mouthfeel combination. It was a bit watery and lacked enough body. The end is definitely on the dry side from the Brett.
This had an ok flavor, but it was not too sour and it seemed the bugs negatively affected the mouthfeel more than they added anything to the flavor. Plovmand (8623) - Grindsted, DENMARK - DEC 27, 2011
Bottle shared with Anker and traded via Axilla. The aroma is funky and fruity with a sour touch. Notes of dark fruits, cherries and toasted malt. The flavour is cherries, oak, ripe fruit, brown sugar and light roasted caramel. Complex but quaffable. thirdeye11 (6162) - Dallas, Texas, USA - OCT 4, 2011
(750ml bottle) cloudy ruby pour with no head. Nose of sour cherry, funky Belgian yeast, and barrel. Where’s the quad? Doesn’t matter, it smells like a delicious sour. Taste of tart cherry, funky, oak, some caramel, a delicious linger!! Some cognac and quite complex really. Just an awesome beer. Almost exactly like a sour as opposed to a quad that’s been soured. In short: An intense, oaky, tannic and slightly sour strong amber ale with a ton of cherries. Excellent sipperDrake (14078) - Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA - AUG 6, 2011
How: Bottle 750ml shared at RBSG 2011 grand tasting
The look: Cloudy dark-amber body topped by a medium off-white head with good retention
In long: Nose is powerful, a bit wild/farmhouse, lots of cherries. Taste is sharp and very tannic, fresh red cherries, oaky sourness, some darker fruits. A bit sweeet at first but finish is abruptly saliva sucking. Alcohol absurdly well hidden. This is classified here on ratebeer as an Abt but the flavor profile is more like a Flemish Sour on steroids with extra cherries. Another strong big strong ale durign a big beer day. A very nice beer I was able to enjoy during the kick-ass Ratebeer Summer Gathering week-end. To me, the existence of the annual RBSG is the one proof that the internet can be used for more than watching porn, illegally downloading music & movies and watching videos of cute kittens doing adorable things.
750 mL bottle shared by MrChopin at the 5/7/11 DC Ratebeer gathering. Pours a clear brownish red color with a thin white head. Decent head retention and lacing. Aroma of tart cherries, leafy vegetal notes and a dark malty finish. There taste is tart cherries, chocolate and a malty finish. Faint wood. Not too complex but very nice.

750ml bottle (RBSG). Poured a deeper amberish color with a small sized off white head. Aromas of cherries, dark fruits, wood, and candi sugar. Tastes of cherries, woody/oakiness, candi sugar, some funkiness, and vanilla. italarican (1606) - Indiana, Pennsylvania, USA - JUN 12, 2011
Bottle generously shared at the RBSG grand tasting. Beautiful pour of a hazy, glowing orange. Aroma hits first of bourbon, then some tart cherry and sweet toasted coconut. Great and complex flavor of vanilla, brett, sour cherry, and brown sugar. Crisp, acidic front with more bourbon in the finish. This is a winner! decaturstevo (6343) - decatur, Tennessee, USA - JUN 12, 2011
