16.9oz bottle -
This beer was being sold at a premiu $9.00 price tag, and I knew that Hermitage isn’t the greatest brewers in the world so I passed. Then, near Thanksgiving it went on sale for about $5.00 a bottle (probably because no one was buying it) so I bought a bottle and man....just crappola.
You know you have issues when the first thing you smell is rubber. Tire rubber to more specific and to go even further it was tire rubber after a car peels out on the street. Combine that with an overly ashy aroma and I knew this was going to be a long pint. Flavor seemed so bitter, almost medicinal bitter without anything to keep it from being unbalanced. Some bitter chocolate notes no doubt from the malts, but it was like taking a big bite of 99% dark chocolate....blech. Chalky as the beer goes down, smelling the tire rubber, unbalanced...there’s some kind of tartness that seems to be there too. I can only hope that this was a bad bottle, but I won’t be buying another one so it’s a loss. Unfortunately, the barleywine was also pretty bad. slowrunner77 (12043) - Reno, Nevada, USA - SEP 22, 2014
"This was one I’d passed on forever, and finally caved, just for curiosity sake, when it was on sale for $5. Still overpriced, but whatever. You don’t know til you try. Really not as bad as I was expecting, given the brewer. Semi-sweet chocolate and a little baker’s cocoa in the nose and flavor. Expectedly thin. Flavor and aroma still mildly pleasant, though, and nothing was off. Bittersweet mocha finish."

Black in color with a small tan head. Damn this is buttery. Roasted malt, chocolate, smoke, and some graham cracker. A little bit of toffee, some ash, and maybe bandaids. The flavor is no better. Tons of butter to go along with the roasted malt and chocolate. Strangely smokey, but some toffee and graham cracker sweetness. Ibrew2or3 (8614) - Tempe, Arizona, USA - JAN 9, 2013
50cl bottle pours with a dark body that supports a mocha colored head of foam. The aroma offers up some malt balls, dark roasted coffee, dark roasted malts, a touch of burnt malts as well as some black licorice. The taste is similar with a mix of malt balls, black licorice, dark roasted coffee and nearly burnt maltiness. I’m not getting really any chocolate notes. Black color with tan sheen. Nice milk chocolate, nutty, graham cracker aromas. medium body with a smooth mouthfeel. Dry chocolatre, medium roast coffee-mocha flavors--decent

Poured from a bottle with tan head which dissipates quickly with only minor traces left, aroma is chocolate and the taste is overpoweringly citrus, minor carbonation, thin on the palate,... ross (2146) - weddington, North Carolina, USA - JUN 1, 2012
Bottle from Richard. Thanks. Pours out a dark brown color with a tan head on it. Smell is full of chocolate; not many hops. Some alcohol noted but not alot. Good stuff, probably better than it is rated. Rich in flavor and kind of sweet. Not bad hayduke (5204) - Eureka, California, USA - MAY 7, 2012
Shared with Strykzone on Facebook Chat. Pours from the 500 ml bottle a very dark red brown with a creamy tan head and moderate lacing. Nose is first chocolate with a sniff of citrus. Medium in body. Creamy mouthfeel. The chocolate dominates the flavor with lots of burnt malts and good bitterness. The finish shows some coffee and more bitterness. This is an exceptionally tasty one. Pint bottle from Hayduke. We enjoyed a bottle together via facebook chat. That is such a fun way to enjoy traded beers! This had red during the pour but little in the glass. A cool 3 tone tan head lasted nicely and left some lacing. A big chocolate nose is sweet, rich, and nice. But it is not really tasted in the beginning. Instead it starts out grassy and swampy with citrus hops. To be honest, I just finished a salad with jalapenos and my palate was not ideal. However, towards the end chocolate stepped up and at the finish and it became more balanced. Then on the last sip coffee was tasted. This was quite tasty and kept surprising me. Fun! Its aroma is very pleasing when poured and its got that wonderful dark color and brown head. Its very hood on initial taste but doesn?t have that great of an aftertaste. Overall i?m glad i tried it but I won?t try it again.
