Draught at the brewery. Light brown color with a thick off-white head. The aroma was really earthy, like dirt and minerals, augmented by a little crackery malt. Mineral-earth flavor with some roasted bitterness and relatively high hop bitterness as well. medium-light bodied with medium carbonation. Just a bit too bitter and earthy to really get into. elihapa (1554) - Honolulu, Hawaii, USA - JUL 17, 2008
On tap, part of sampler. Pours a rather simple light brown. Nose of malt and smoke. Palate was too light for me, I felt like I was drinking a pale ale colored brown! However, the flavor is quite an attractive blend of malt and earthy mineral that produced a well-rounded sweet flavor. Refreshing, to say the least. Last note: I see some other very poor reviews of this beer by RB, although some of these reviews are three years old. Perhaps Island has made some improvements, ’cause this brew and others really weren’t that bad. . . User57106 (246) - - FEB 19, 2008
Draft at brewery, consumed 02/18/08. Unusual color for a nut brown ale: pale amber. No aroma to speak of. Strange mineral water flavor shared with some other beers from this brewery. A little nutty malt flavor, some bitterness on finish. A bit of parch on the tongue as well. Not a successful attempt, sadly. joohefner (380) - Isla Vista, California, USA - DEC 12, 2007
yeah nothing very exciting and very little flavor, a light bread malt aroma and taste, about it. medium thin crisp body with a metallic tinge. its a shame i dont think these guys quite have their brew system worked out yet GuilTTy (735) - Cherry Hill, New Jersey, USA - NOV 19, 2005
I seriously thought about about not posting a review of this beer because I thought I might have gotten a bad bottle but after reading Ale Drinker’s notes, I figured my experience was a valid criticism, so here goes.... Clear medium brown pour with a TOWERING light brown head - in fact - the head was so huge that I thought I forgot how to pour or I may have forgotten that I shook the bottle first. Anyway, after the head settled later that day, the aroma struck its first assault. Very sour and very hard to ignore. Some malt seemed to be trapped in there but it took some doing to pick it out. The flavor was nothing short of awful - who mixed dill pickle juice into my glass? Seriously, the flavor would have made more sense if the brewer was Vlassic. The taste was very sour with more than a hint of dill. The mouthfeel was similar to Classic Coke with enough carbonation to lift Skylab back into space. The only good thing about the finish was that it eventually finished. Either this was a bad bottle or Island is a bad brewey (or has a poor bottling line with weak QC). Thankfully, a Stone Smoked Porter was in the fridge and worked its magic soon after this one hit the bottom of the drain.

I don’t know what is going on with these guys but it seems like almost every time I pick up one of their brews there is something seriously wrong with it. They all have the same sour vinegar flavor that just overwhelms the entire palate. I’m surprised more people don’t complain of this because I was noticing this exact same flavor in several of their other brews about 6 months ago. I’m not sure if its infected, or sunlight, or old or what. But all I really detect as far as taste and smell is sour vinegar. I ended up dumping this one and hate letting beer go to waste. In the flavor I tried to see paste the awful sourness and detected a slight maltiness. Forget it. I’ve just had way too many bad bottles from these guys. They need to get their crap figured out before they ship out any more bottles. beerguy101 (5360) - Newark, California, USA - OCT 23, 2004
Dark brown color. Medium sized foamy head. Aroma is nutty and sweet with a touch of fruit. A light to medium bodied Nut Brown Ale. Malts are roasty and nutty, slightly fruity. Mildly bitter hops. Smooth taste. Nice balance. A touch metallic and a bit thin. Mouthfeel is thin. Finish is clean. Aftertaste is slightly bitter with a slight metallic taste. Medium brown in colour, murky body with a light tan head. Moderate citric American hop aroma with fruity esters and light malt nose. A medium malt flavor both caramel and smokey, with medium bitterness from the hops both citric and fruity. Mildly astringent with a buttery diacetyl aftertaste. Dry slightly tart finish. flutetokill (523) - Fresno, California, USA - OCT 17, 2004
Medium mahogany color with a medium tan head. Roasted hazelnut and malt aroma. Sour metallic hazelnut and malt flavor. The metallic taste is not quite as obtrusive as in their Jubilee ale, but still disappointingly present. loweredsixth (946) - Clovis, California, USA - OCT 17, 2004
Ruby-brown, translucent, with a nice tan head. The aroma and flavor were very nutty, roasted, with a slight metallic character. The feel was slightly thin...semi-wet finish.
