3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Poured from a 500 mL bottle into a plastic cup on the ferry to Islay. Bottle conditioned version. Pours opaque dark copper-brown. Sweet malts (pale and crystal) and barley on the nose. Flavour is layered dark malts and spicy hops (Goldings, Mount Hood, Fuggles). This was the "Champion Scottish Beer of Britain 2009" and I can see why.
Pours a lovely reddish copper/amber colour, clear with a little bit of head. Aroma is very restrained, a bit malty, caramelly and sweet. Slight bitter note. Medium body, interesting mouthfeel. Flavour is mild, nutty, quite caramelly, surprisingly rich and malty, finishes nicely bitter and dry with a hint of orange. Nice! blackisle (2582) - Amsterdam IJburg, NETHERLANDS - FEB 17, 2016
Bottle 50cl. Poured into a tumbler. Clear deep amber, small frothy beige head, mostly diminishing, light lacing; aroma toasted malts, caramel, bread, woody notes; taste is medium sweet and bitter, malty, toffee, average duration, dry and toasted malts finish; medium body, oily texture, soft carbonation; perhaps bit thin but on the whole a pleasant bitter. Scottish bitter apparently based on their Finlaggan Ale, but a bit darker, more toasty maltiness, a bit woody and mineral-like, bit thin mouthfeel, smooth. Should re-rate this as this is done from memory and it’s been a long time. OleR (4804) - Oslo, NORWAY - JUN 5, 2014
Nut brown with a reddish hue. Some beige bubbles on the surface. Soft caramel nose, and some mild fruity and grassy hops. Light body. Mellow mouthfeel. On the sweet side. Toasted and light caramelly malts. Lasting grassy and fruity bitterness. Finishes fairly dry. 500ml bottle from Drinkmonger, Edinburgh. Pours clear copper, nice lacing. Aromas of soft caramel, light fruit. nothing much else, nothing much changes on the taste, a bit watery. Passable. KansaiBeerLvrs (5152) - Kyoto, JAPAN - JUL 15, 2013
UPDATED: JUL 24, 2013 Bottle at the GJBF 2013 Osaka. A dark maroon color, nice looking. Some smokiness but a two-dimensional beer which is a bit rough. Not bad, an ok bitter. A bottle at home from rakuten, slightly sour, rough taste, it seems to have gone off...the color is still great and so is the body/head but it seems somewhat oxidized or something. Definitely the worse for wear. In this condition I’d give it a 2.5...
