Draft @ Brewer’s on the Bay, Newport, OR. Pours a slightly hazy amber color with a small off-white head. Has a sweetish malty hoppy aroma with some hints of citrus. Sweetish malty hoppy flavor with some hints of caramel and citrus. Has a sweetish malty hoppy bitter finish.

Draught at the Latona, Seattle
Hazy dull amber colour. Bright, woody, slightly grapefruity hop nose. Rich hoppy character. Sharp contrasts within the hops...big piney depths and bright mango and passion fruit as well...all from hops...all at once. Throw in some guava and this is pretty cool. Finishes like fresh-squeezed grapefruit juice. The malt is there only as a skeleton. Tasty unbalanced IPA is a staple of Washington State.

Draft - Sweet and malty. Clear Amber with a decent white head. Sweet and malty with a minimal hop profile. Too sweet.

Tap at the Latona Pub. Slightly hazy, orange-amber beer. Big fruity grapefruity aroma, tropical fruity, very juicy Amarillo hop character. Sweet malts play a backing role to the big juicy hop aroma. Flavour is also hop dominated, sweet citrusy flavour, light caramel, faint toast, but the hops are what this beer is all about. Sticky body, lingering bitterness. A bit herbaceous. A damn tasty beer.

draft. lightly hazed bronze body, white head. bright fruit cocktail nose with mostly clean yeast and light caramel malt sweetness. hop-focused and appropriately bitter and acidic which tempers the caramel sweetness. frothy and a little too chewy and big for it’s own good. dry it out a little and bring it down to around 6% and let the fresh, dank hops shine more.

Draft at Brouwer’s Cafe Hopfest ’06. **NOTE**: This review applies to the DH "Arlen’s Goodbye" version, which may end up with a separate entry for all I know--and I’ll move it if it does. Amber, almost a dark amber, with a slightly offwhite head. There are rumors of malt in the attack and the mid-palate, but this beer is a true hop delivery vessel, like so many of the big west coast DIPAs and IIPAs Brouwer’s chose for Hopfest this year. Tsunami finish of piney resin, but the crescendo is appropriate somehow to the rather milder setup the rest of the beer provides. Harshly caustic, in fact, but not too crazy by West Coast IIPA standards--it’s beautifully done, big and refreshing. Notable ultimately for the big bitter blossom at the end and the loooong bitter finish.

I really liked this one. Pours copper with some brownish hues in the background. Lots of "contraband" hops in the nose. Super leafy, herbal. Really enjoyable nose for me. More leafy, herbal, dank hop flavors on top of a dry malty body that showcases the hops amazingly well. Not bitter, but hoppy. So many tasty juicy resins. God damn. I loved it.

Draft pour at the Issaquah brew house. Listed simply as Issaquah Brewhouse Contraband. Pours a dark copper color with a ton of head and lace. Over the top sweet malt aroma. Super sweet. Flavor still sweet, but much less intense. Flavorful. Nice hop presence. I guess this was brewed specially for the 3 pubs, but I’m glad I could try it here. Overall a good IPA.

On tap handle called Contraband XXXIIPA. Copper-tanned body with decent head. Pungent, grapefruity and leafy co-humulone nose. Lovely blend of musky summer air and piquant grapefruit with a pinch of grass. The body is more grassy and bitter. Not as leafy, but some grapefruit still evident. Slight metallic bitter finish. Solid overall.
