GeneralGao (3614) - Iowa City, Iowa, USA - AUG 3, 2007
New arrival at John’s Grocery in Iowa City. Nice painted 750 ml bottle; corked, capped, and sealed with red wax. Poured an orange-golden color. Head was bubbly with good retention, but no lace. Aromas were subdued overall, but strengthened as the beer warmed. There was clove, watered-down cider vinegar, bread dough, a hint of brown sugar, and cereal grain. Sweet on the tongue up front with unpleasant acidity and hop bitterness at the end that mixed unfavorably with the cloying sugar. Full bodied. Tasted of esters, apple, candi sugar, and alcohol. A detracting husky grain note lingered.

Side trip to Rogue Ales in Newport, Oregon during ABA Beer Tour ’07. On draught at the brewery’s tap room (second level) as "Rogue Menage Frog." Pours a hazy golden pale blone brew with a thin white head that quickly disappears to a fine ring. Aroma of sweet Belgian malt, yeast and some banana esters. Taste is medium bodied, light carbonation with a peppery texture and flavors. Other falvors picked up include yeast, tart apples and some bread dough. Finish is slightly sweet, a little grassy and dry.

750ml bottle, no pop from the cork was a bad sign, especially since it was wax capped too. hazy orangey gold color, with lots of small yeasty floaties. no head, just a off-white ring of bubbles making a ring around the edge of the glass. aroma is sweet bubblegum wheat like malt - - is this a wit? very light dried lemon peel aroma, a little tart & phenolic. mouthfeel is medium, kind of slick. very low carbonation. flavor is bready, doughy, yeasty malt, some bubblegum. finish is a little boozy like cheap rum. duped again by a wax capped 750ml bottle!

750 shared at Dickinsonbeers place. Hazy golden in color. Aroma: banana esters, some rubbery phenols as well as sweet malt. Taste is rather subdued and a bit muddled for a tripel, sweet banana esters, notes of rubbery phenols as well as herbal hops. a decent amount of sweetness throughout the taste. not too good.

Kinz (3786) - Glen Allen, Virginia, USA - JUN 23, 2007
Bottle was waxed, capped, and corked, perhaps a bit of overkill for a tripel. But attractive. Beer poured a deep gold or light copper depending on your point of view. Not much head. Aroma was yeast and light fruit. Flavor was very fruity, with apricot, peach, and blood orange, sitting on light honey oriented malts. Light hay on the finish, with some faint spice. Better than I was expecting.

Bottle. Pours a dirty straw color with a white head. Aromas of straw, grass, pepper and bread. Fruity qualities were downplayed compared to other tripels. Sourdough bread flavor of the pilsner malt is very apparant, and the hops leave a peppery flavor to balance. Yeast flavors are pretty mild, but it’s there. Finishes dry and slightly toasty, very nice flavor on the throat. Medium bodied texture, both creamy and slick. Rather simple in flavor compared to most tripels, but nothing tastes off (like Golden Monkey does to me). Nice to sample.

(750ml bottle) Clear apple juice body topped by medium off-white head that mostly dissipates. Aroma is medium sweet, orange, some banana, bread, coriander, herbal. Taste is moderately sweet, candi sugar, orange peel, salt, sour (lemon), light herbal. Medium body.

SledgeJr (3577) - Omaha, Nebraska, USA - MAY 27, 2007
On tap at the Rogue Ales Public House in SF. Menu board claims that this is in the XS series. Slightly cloudy dark gold. A serious white head of great staying power. Mild estery bubble gum aroma. Fairly thick palate. The sweetness is huge, but it has a malty, not candy sweetness. Has a quick finish without the pacman tartness. Nicely medicinal at the end.

golden yellow with a big frothy head. very light aromas of bananas, yeast and sugar. very light mouthfeel with decent carbonation. apple flavors with some honey (says tons of belgian candy sugar but did not really come out for me) and banana. slightly dry finish. very mediocre triple but not bad.
