Cask Pint at Edward Rayne (JDW), Raynes Park, London in Nov 2012 - Opaque Black in colour. Very Malty; roasty/burnt malts, liquorice, espresso coffee, some chocolate, caramel. Fruity; berry fruits. Hoppy; some hop bitterness. Sweetish malty stout with a sour fruit/hop note. Very drinkable. Decent. (2012-11-17)

tombyars (1766) - Saltcoats, SCOTLAND - DEC 13, 2016
Tasted this in the Three Judges, Glasgow on the 9th December 2016. Cask, handpump dispense. Black ruby in colour with a pale buff head. Malty aroma with notes of chocolate drinking powder evident. Thin but creamy mouthfeel and good lacing. Dark malt complex delivers a maltloaf base with dark chocolate and prunes. Slight hop prickle present in the earthy aftertaste but this is short lived. Malt returns in the finish with smooth roast grain, liquorice and dark chocolate notes in the mouth. A good decent Stout full of depth and complexity, well recommended.

ForlornHope (536) - Hampshire, ENGLAND - DEC 13, 2016
Bottle at home. Pours black with red hints and a small tan head. Roast malt and chocolate on the nose with a whiff of Madeira. Sweet start with a bitter back up. More chocolate and roast flavour, herbal bitterness and alcohol. Smooth and rich with a dry finish. Very pleasant.

Chocolate, dark, toasted malts, cacao, more dark chocolate. Black, small, creamy, beige head. Light bitter. More dark chocolate malts, cacao, light filter coffee, soft carbonation, medium bodied, more bitter sweet chocolates in the finish. Nice Stout, nice palate, well-balanced. Cask at Defector’s Weld, Shepherds Bush.

Cask at lescar, sheffield. Black with tan lace. Interesting aroma, liquorice and dark fruit. Sweet and tart with a subtle bitterness. A bit thin (especially considering it’s marketed as an impy stout), and slight carbonation.

Cask at the haymarket. Pours black, light just gets through, beige head. Light roast aroma, toffee. Taste is more toffee and coffee. Medium body, roasted bitter finish.
