Tasted on 4/28/12 with the Nashville and Knoxville crews at Curtis’ old house, big thanks to JR for bringing this one. Pours nearly black dark brown with no head but a few brown bubbles. The nose is dark chocolate, dried blueberry, milk chocolate syrup, and a touch of coffee. The flavor is more dusty dark chocolate and somewhat sweet milk chocolate with the dried blueberry underlying. The body is full with a syrupy texture, light carbonation, and a long dark chocolate covered blueberry finish.

Very dark brown pour, tan head. Sour berries, roasted malt, bitter chocolate....not liking this a whole lot.

Bottle shared by Sean, thanks! Pours black with no hard whatsoever. Aroma has a good amount of slightly tart blueberry backed by coffee and roasted malts. Flavor starts with tart blueberry and roasted malts and a hint of acid in the finish.

Pours jet black with no head. Aroma is strong, berries and vinegar. Taste follows, tart, berries and vinegar. Not my favorite.

12oz bottle courtesy of my Jackie O’s source. Cheers! Pours a deep black with virtually no tan head. Nose is chocolate, vanilla, some light wood, coffee, and some dark fruit. Flavor is a strange mix: it starts with chocolate and coffee followed by more spice and coffee, then tart berry then a hint of wood and a vanilla in the background, but all along there are tart berries. I am not sure- there is a big clash between the coffee and the berry. These two refuse to get along and each keeps trying to assert itself. The spice and the chocolate refuse to take sides, but all along this beer has an interesting tartness that just doesn’t quite fit.

12 oz. bottle. Pours dark brown to black with very little in the way of a head. The aroma has hints of the dark roasted malts, dark chocolate and other things that make Dark Apparition a great beer, but adds some green (unripened) blueberries which over powers the base beer. Flavor shows some roasted malts, dark chocolate, mild bourbon with some tart blueberry that distracts a bit from the base. I didn’t think this was bad, just not as good as the base beer.

Sweet, malty, very sour. Not necessarily blueberry flavor, but it does have a generic sour Belgian flavor. Dark body, flat. Pale rim.

Bottle… Pours tar black with no head. The aroma offers loads of maple syrup and dried plum with underpinnings of blackstrap molasses, date and blueberry. Medium-bodied with moderate carbonation. The flavor is a swirl of sour blueberries intermingled with blackstrap molasses, maple and dried plum. Very tart, fruity, blueberry finish. Thanks to darkguardian for sharing this bottle!

Bottle. Poured a black color with a minimal frothy brown head that lasted with fair lacing good legs. Moderate to heavy roasted chocolate, dark blueberry and alcohol aroma. Medium to heavy sweet dark chocolate malt and dark blueberry flavor with a medium to heavy sweet dark fruit and small alcohol bite finish of moderate to long duration. Medium to full body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. This is another solid fruit beer.

Dark App put into a 7 gallon bourbon barrel with blueberries added. Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a tasting glass. 3.5 A: Black color. Small creamy light brown head. 2.5 S: Bourbon isn’t very strong and the beer doesn’t smell much like Dark App. The chocolate that makes the beer great is for the most part missing Supple roastiness. Light diacetyl. Super tart blueberries (like completely unripened) doesn’t fit in well. 1.5 T: Huge amounts of tart blueberry. This resembles a sour more than an RIS. Touch of diacetyl again. Very faint bourbon. Light roast, but not much else from what I know Dark App to taste like. 2.0 M: Lighter medium body. This even feels more like a sour than a stout. No creaminess to speak of. 1.5 D: Massively disappointing. I wouldn’t have pegged this as an RIS if I had it in a blind tasting, let alone Dark App. Everyone I talked to hated this one. No redeeming qualities. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 03-25-2012 18:20:58
