On tap into a snifter. Appearance is a dark black with a thin tan head. Aroma is of spices and orange peel with notes of coffee and chocolate. Taste follows suit with the aroma and reminds me of an Imperial Stout that was blended with a Belgian White Ale. Sampled from the tap at the brewery during the 5th anniversary party. Poured black with near-opaque edges and a gray head that dissipated quickly. Aroma had strong notes of coffee, dark grains, and bitter chocolate with a roasted malt and spice backing. Draft sample @ 5th Anniversary party. Pours dark brown/black with a small beige head. The aroma has roasted malts, chocolate, coffee, hints of vanilla, herbal character is strong with cardamom and orange peel. The flavor has much of the same; roasted malts, coffee, chocolate, orange peel and herbs. This was good, but I like some of the other treatments better. Sample at the Jackie O’s Bottle Sale/ Stout and Big Beer Fest on 02/05/2011. Pours brownish-black with a medium light beige head that recedes quickly. Partial rings of lace on the glass. Aroma of ginger-infused coffee. Medium to full body with flavors of grainy malt, coffee and sweet spices. The finish is coffee and orange rinds. A little disjointed flavor profile overall but an interesting experiment overall.

This poured a very dark brown almost black with a lgiht tan head. Aroma was light spices, the cardamom comes through a bit, and the normal roasted character of the base beer too. Turk.. Appearance same as the rest... Aroma has black licorice, anise,
and a mild cardommon component...Flavors are big on black licorice and
anise and cardammom which subside for more of a chocolate roastiness
but much more subdued than the anise and first mentioned flavored.
Body is thin to medium more towards the thin side with decent

While this was an interesting brew, it was definitely my least favorite of the Dark Apparition varieties that I tried, which I think at this point was nearly all of them. The beer itself was a very dark brown with a tan tan head and a bit of a bubbly cap as it faded. The nose was interesting and the vanilla mixed well with everything. The orange peel came out a bit, but eventually was a bit dominated by the cardamom. The flavor suffered the same fate but to a much larger degree with the cardamom’s spice really taking it up a notch and taking over the other characteristics of the beer, even the base. This spice carried over into the feel and certainly affected the drinkability.
