Sample at Jackie O’s as part of Ohio Brew Week. Dark reddish-brownish-black pour with a medium thin beige head that recedes steadily. Spotty lacing on the glass. The aroma consists of dark fruit, malt and oak. Full-bodied with a nice bourbon-soaked chocolate covered raisin flavor with some malt in the background. Growler brought back by Dogbrick. Pitch black pour with a thin tan head. Malty nose with notes of raisin, wild yeast sourness and roasted malt. Malty flavor with chocolate and raisin character before the sourness takes over. Once it’s off your tongue, you get a lingering roastiness. The day I had them, I liked this one better because I was able to get more of the complexity, but I could see myself switching to the cherry when I want something more sour. Poured on draft. Appearance is a dark dark brown, pretty much black with a nice dark grey head of foam. Almost a purple head. The nose is fairly loaded with the rum barrel notes adding head and then the wild yeast adding some lactic sour notes that I can’t help but like. Taste is initially all boozy rum, but as I delve more into the beer I get a nice raisin taste that begins to blend with some tart, sour, lactic notes. Quite an interesting beer. On tap at the brewpub. Pours a black colored body with a finger-width, dense and creamy, dark brown head that dissipates slowly and leaves a nice lacing. Aroma is sweeter than the Cherry Robustic with more chocolate initially and a bit of a dark raisin note. Still a good amount of tart cherries with a lighter wood and just a touch of rum. Light roast with some lactose coming through and a funky Brett. Flavor is similar. More roasts and chocolate up front than the Cherry Robustic with a bit of a sweet raisin and a nice tart cherry. A bit more funky in the middle than the Cherry Robustic with some wood and a touch of rum. Light roast towards the end as the wood and a slight rum pick up leaving just a touch of alcohol. Medium-light bitterness with some nice dark chocolate and roast notes alongside the tart cherries. Lengthy aftertaste following a medium-light body and a light, tickling carbonation. Overall, a really solid beer. The Cherry Robustic was more tart and I liked how the chocolate and roasts brought everything together more as it warmed, but they definitely stick out more initially in this one while leaving the tartness, wood, and rum to linger with a slight raisin sweetness. The rum barrel is light on this, but a bit more distinct than the bourbon was on the Cherry Robustic. Really nice and very impressed nonetheless. Draft, Poured a black color with an average frothy brown head that mostly diminished with fair lacing. Moderate to heavy toasted malt, chocolate fruit and wood alcohol aroma. Medium to heavy toasted chocolate malt, nutty and dark fruit flavor with a heavy dark sweet & sour and small alcohol bite finish of moderate to long duration. Full body with a dry smooth texture and flat carbonation. This is another standout beer.

On tap, pours a deep brown with thin tab head. Aroma is sour and dark with a lot of malt and dark fruits. The flavor is complex there is definitely a lot of sour yeast character with rum and woody notes all on top of a nutty stout. Draft at the 7th Anniversary party. Pours dark brown to black with a very thin film. The aroma has some of the stout character (roast, chocolate) with the tart dark fruits and lightly acidic notes from the bugs added. The flavor is a nice blend of the two as well. Sampler flight on tap at the brewpub (Athens, OH). Pours a richer opaque blackish thick hue, brownish ruby edges and bottom with small frothy darker brown head that dies to a ring, laces small. Aromas are more decadent, gentle heat, vanilla, and rum spirit. Brown sugar, raisins and dark fruit, toffee. Cocoa, rum elements, and roasty malts. Caramel, biscuits. Darker and decadent, a bit sweet with that rum element taking hold. Initial is medium bodied, a bit thinned with rum, red fruit, and raisins. Carmelization, some toffee, toast, and vanilla. A bit funky as the brett elements come on in the middle, less heat here than #1 with firm funk, rum, with dark fruit really takes hold, plum and raisin with roast, cocoa, and biscuits. Toffee, barrel, kisses of heat. Rum and dark fruit take really make their presence felt. I enjoyed #1 more, but overall this is a solid beer. Dark fruit, touch of roast, cocoa, and good flavors. Sample on tap at Jackie-O’s 7th... My last (coherent) rate of the night. Labeled "Dark Robustic 2", as usual. Very dark brown color. No head or lace. Good rum barrel / raisin aroma. Wow! Huge tart taste, very good. Big bitter sweet flavor. Raisin, grape-peel, bigger body. Light carbonation, dry texture, very impressive. Big grape skin, grape aroma. Very tasty. Nice sour stout, though more tart and sour than Jolly Pumpkin’s Dark Dawn Stout. That sour stout had a very nice balance and classic stouty chewiness that is hard to beat. Big lacto scent and mild Brett characters. Currants and figs. Sweet raspberries.
Start is a robust malty stout. Big smoked and dark malts. In the middle, you get this big fig and raisin taste. Finish is tart. Mildly sweet with a boozy burn in the mouth and throat.
20% carbonation in mouth swish.
89/100. Loving what’s going on here. Very delicious.
